Appalachians came from the Alleghenian orogeny only like ~300 million years ago during the Permian period. The Earth was absolutely teeming with life at that point, and the atmosphere was more or less the same as today, plenty of oxygen thanks to all the fucking gigantic forests covering the planet which eventually became the coal found throughout Appalachia.
