Internal frame is better for 99% of backpackers.
Externals are cheaper and are easier to constantly attach and detach random things from. Some people say the weight distribution is better on externals, but that is subjective.

Internals conform to your body better and are better for long, rugged hikes. Internals today are as good as they've ever been, so externals really only exist for nostalgia or niche purposes.

You'll probably want something between 70 and 80 liters. Try to pare down your packed gear to as little as possible since it sounds like you'll be able to restock your supplies fairly frequently.

external frame packs are essentially satchels enclosed in a metal cage, internal frame packs weave the pack material in and around the cage

external frames are good for extreme weight loads (such as if you're in the military), but in order to accomodate that they keep the load high and away from your body, so hiking through rough terrain becomes difficult. the packs themselves are also relatively heavier than internal frame packs. internal frames are lighter and smaller and sexier and have a wider range of options to choose from, but internal frames often mean that the pack volume will be distributed amongst millions and millions of pockets. your back will be much sweatier and sorer carrying one around all day than with an external frame. they are also generally more expensive.

If you're walking on plain roads and not climbing mountains you're better off with an external frame. It will also help you have a better post posture when walking and have better ventilation. They're also easier to repair should anything brake.
