If you were going hunting with it, you would have to get pretty close to the animal to hit it hard enough to even do any sort of damage, and even then you are unlikely to kill it unless you get a headshot with an axe.
As for combat uses, again, you have to be a specific distance away for it to actually hit with the blade, and the amount of damage you'd do wouldn't be worth the loss of a weapon, you'd be better off keeping it on your person and getting up close and personal with the guy.
TLDR; Throwing weapons are fun as shit, but in terms of throwing them for practical terms you are better off just not throwing them.
If you are innawoods with a knife, find some long grass/plant stems, or whatever you could use for a rope, find a stick that is a decent length and thickness, tie your knife to it, spear.
If you are innawoods with and axe, find a stick of same description, carve one end into a point, spear.
