When I saw a really clear night sky for the first time in my life I instantly just "got" why all the early civilizations, independent of each other, were so fixated on the stars and all their religions were connected to them in one way or another.
Same thing with a proper thunderstorm. It really feels like the wrath of the gods if you're out doors

I think I would literally kill myself if I had to live in Europe. No vast empty tracts of wilderness. No endless sky-rending mountain ranges stretching into the horizon. No hiking for days in a straight line and not encountering a single soul. And that's not even counting the social and political situation.

I think the best I've seen stars was at pic related. No rain so we just slept on a tarp. Soon after dark you could see orbiting satellites pretty much continuously.

Best night sky I've seen is over Barker wildlife refuge in NM and backcountry camping in Big Bend NP. Barker's in a high valley next to some BS ranch, you get good altitude and no light pollution. No light at BBNP either, and you have low humidity so there's no clouds or distortion.

When you really see the night sky you'll understand why they named it the Milky Way.
