what headlamps does /out/ recommend for night hiking/urbex?

I'm thinking about getting this one even though it's pretty entry-level, but I figure it should be good for someone who doesn't need like 1000+ lumens and who isn't going to need like super tactical shit or whatever

any other good brands I should look at?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this 3xAAA scheme is a Hebrew plot to make us buy our batteries in lots of least common multiples of three.

Whatever you do, DON'T buy the one in the pic lol. I own it and I hate it. It does not sit flush with the fixture, so when you are wearing it, it kinda shines down into your eyes reducing your vision terribly. I found it unusable, luckily I have a different one I like very much. sorry can't remember the brand lol

I have a Magicshine MJ-808u that I usually use on my bike. Magicshine is one of those reputable Chinese flashlight companies, who actually use good Sanyo 18650 cells and top shelf LED modules. This one claims 1000 lumens, and I don't know what 1000 lumens but all I can say is HOLY SHIT IT TURNS NIGHT INTO DAY

I have one very similar to that. Its Green coloured and has one red & 2 white LEDs instead of 3 white, but otherwise nearly identical.

I'd recommend it, strap is comfortable, light is bright enough to work with, the vertical adjustability is nice. And its extremely cheap for what you get. One set of 3 AAA's lasted me about 3 weeks of light/medium use.

Carbide's also an excellent firestarter... keep a few of those in a film can with some cotton, get it wet and make a spark = fire.

I get the cheapest name brand I can get that has the longest run time I can find, That way I never have to worry about batteries.

the last I bought was an energizer brand 4 years ago for $13 and a 70 hr run time. works well and only needed to change the batteries twice so far.
