A good trick is to take a small metal box (ex: breath mints) and use it to make fire cloths. Cut up a t-shirt into rectangles the same size as the box. Put them in the box and close it. Put the box in a fire and wait a couple minutes until it is a coal-colored black.
Repeat until you have hundreds of these. If you really want to make a stick fire (God only knows why you are that unprepared) use a small ball of char cloth as the tinder material.
