I did some clamming when I was younger (stoppit) and those are definitely mussels. If you MUST eat them, it will take 2-3 days to flush them out. This improves taste and gets rid of any sand or other debris. Here's how:
>Rinse the mussels, don't scrub too hard.
>Cover them with clean water and leave the bucket in a cool, shady area undisturbed.
>Do not disturb them.
>You will see them open up, and start to squirt out water. The debris should go with it.
>Change the water every 12 hours.
>Change the water every 12 hours.
>Don't make me say it again.
>When the water is clean for 2 cycles in a row, or after 3 days, steam the fuckers and enjoy with garlic butter.
>If the mussels die off before then, take it as a sign you should not eat them.
Some people add cornstarch to the first few batches to help cleanse the mussels chakra, but I've always found it just extended the process. You may want to add this step just in case. If in doubt, throw them out.
