There is no need to baton with a hatchet, there is no need to not bring a hatchet on a planned trip, if you get stranded in the wild without one then obv batoning is a last resort.

My main interest is bushcrafting and I do a lot of carving, the hollow grind is best for fine cuts and intricate work but still sturdy enough for heavier stuff.
The flat ground Whitby I've found to be my favourite all rounder.
I've also got a convex ground Condor Bushlore which is beter for heavy work and a scandi ground Puukko which rarely gets used.
Those in the pic are my two go-to blades

I too. own an Esee 6. only with no serrations or ground swedge. and i would be lying is i said that it wasnt my favourite knife. the trouble is just that i i found out after i got it that where i live. knives taht are not used in kitchen or work and are over 12 cm. technically. need to be registered with police and fuck that shit. so it only goes with me when i go places i know rarely others do

but right now in rotation is my Mora bushcraft survival (cant remember exactly but some buzzwords like that) and i freaking love the shit out of it. i got it on sale at an shop that had to move. its thicker then your standarad mora outdoor line knife and the tang extends further. i love axes too much to not haul one with me so i rarely baton anything but i guess if you wanted to do it with a mora this would be the one

im also trying out a new Opinel. actually it is my first that is large enough to have the locking collor and ive never known how much i wanted this since now. unfortunately they only had it in .if you drop me in the dark you´ll never find me- slate but whatever i can always take the paint of if i cared enough

im thinking the next one too add is something more traditional. you know. wood handles. leather sheath full tang that sort of thing. perhaps a nessmuk or kephart style. i do have some vangedal knives and they are woodhandled with leather sheaths but not full tang and they have some sort of stupidly long ricasso that i for the life of me cant figure out why you´d want. but i think i should hold my wallet on buying more gear. need to eat too

Yeah. Here's a picture of the first sheath which I accidentally made the wrong way round. I made another one the right way round which isn't a nice towards the tip of the blade unfortunately.

Not at all. They're pretty good actually. A bit overpriced here and probably the rest of Europe but for the most part these guys are just fanny flustered about the guy the always posts them. I spent the last few hours making a new sheath. I prefer this one to the other two. The impressions aren't really visible in the photos I took, but this picture shows them the best. I'll take a photo with a better camera tomorrow.

No specific brand. Any random 1095 high carbon steel blades with full tang. Easily get one for 45 bucks. 1095 high carbon is basically the same as A2 tool steel which is what bark river uses.

Rat tail tang knives with a full tang are pretty common. Think Camillus and Ontario Pilot Survival Knives, the infamous Ka-Bar, Case Cutlery's Leather Hunter line, and the Buck 119.

Most Moras I've seen pictures of on here are half or three-quarter tang knives.

Don't get me wrong, I own a mora. It is one of my 4 knives. But there is no reason at all to use it as your primary knife. I use it for very light carving/intricate work. With a strop I'm able to shave with it.

That being said, knives that are not full tang are really impractical. The only reason i bought a mora is because it was 12 dollars.

Nah, they're useful in their own ways. I've done plenty of innawoods with just a pocket knife and a hatchet. I've done innadesert with a pocket knife and a small shovel. One thing survival TV has done is made people too emotionally dependent on a big, beefy, full tang knife. Especially white people, many of whose ancestors took their name from a knife that was about a half tang most of the time.

Source? I go to most of the bushcraftshows over here and a lot bush moots and I've never noticed it. Most people seem to go for Scandi inspired kit or short spearpoint knives and it's only people on the internet who bang on about a knifes tang.
Not sure what point you're trying to make with your seax/Saxon connection but like I said, those things fell out of favour about a thousand years ago and everywhere that was using them moved to a small knife and hatchet.

The point was just that a group of people who have grown into quite a large group (Saxons) took their collective name from a weapon with a half tang. Your knife is the one /out/ item that you shouldn't cheep-out on and while you don't need
to spend an arm & a leg, you ought to spend as much as you can afford, as prices will only
go up and the money spent on a quality tool is well worth the investment, as it'll last you a

the multitool and SAK are always in my day pack, the kershaw and buck are in my hiking pack. sometimes i have both with me and sometimes i don't. and the blades are very different and varying degrees of heavy or light duty.

I feel it is well worth the money, as it's a high quality tool will last a lifetime+

Problems, imo:

powder coated; working on removing that with sandpaper and scouring pad.

doesn't have 90 degree spine; when i have access to a bench grinder, i will modify that.

sabre grind can be problematic for fine carving and feather sticks.

I carry a Mora Bushcraft Black in my pack to fill in where my ESEE fails.

I would say that's more "mall ninja", with "tacticool" applying to any military styled product.

I have no problem with /out/doorsmen who prefer a military theme to their gear and personally
would go that route, before I'd buy something in the bright superhero colors popular among some

I only recommend the Companion as a budget/beginners blade. They do some nice whittling/carving blades but I wouldn't recommend the rest of the range.
For that money you could get yourself a nice puukko or a Bushlore or a Jaguar.

Personally, I carry a cheep no-brand razor knife / clip knife as my work knife, (machinist) as it works
well for cutting cardboard, plastic wrap banding and occasional scraping and I can get replacement
razor blades for free at work.

My after-work "civilian" EDC knife is a CRKT K.I.S.S. which is sturdy yet light weight and small
enough that I can clip my key ring to it when /out/ to keep my keys from falling out of my pocket.

If not planning to use a knife, I take Cold Steel SRK. It's pretty strong, still light enough to be easily carried. Gutting a fish or making a fire is not easy but it can be done. Most importantly SRK is big enough to be used for hacking and light batoning. That means I can build shelter frame without any additional tools like saws or axes. Size is good also for collecting other shelter material like branches or grass.

If I take Bahco Laplander with me, then strong folder will do, usually RAT 1. My EDC is basic aluminium scaled SAK.

The more moving parts you've got, the more likely something is to fail on you, especially when there might be a lot of strain upon one of those parts like a joint. A folding knife is fine for thinks like picking mushrooms, but it's going to have a shorter life than a fixed blade when used for something like carving.

Hi all.

I'm planning on going on a trip to South America for 3 months and I'm gonna be innajungle for a large percentage of it.

I was wondering what knives you would recommend as camping knives. I'm not planning on using it for defense or for super heavy duty stuff, but I'd like something that's study, sharp and reliable (for mostly cutting rope and such).

I'm going to start hiking with my gf very soon. She likes to articulate and taxidermy animals.

Looking for a good knife to cut through sinew and tendons in case we come upon a dead deer or something. Can't carry the entire thing back, so we'd just be harvesting the head or whatever parts she's most interested in.

Right now I'm strongly leaning toward the Benchmade Adamas 375.

Any other suggestions?

Preferably nothing smaller.

I've used a carbone n08 as an EDC for a couple of years, out of the box it was sharp enough to shave, it's had no blade play at all, the lock is excellent, and the single wood construction let me modify the handle to fit me perfectly.

Sanded a small notch by the nail nick and took a little bit off the back, sanded the wood finish off and went over it again with a combination of beeswax and orange oil.

For a $15 folder it's done really well for me, and I'll definitely pick up another one some day

Grandpa made it when I was young. The blade is bought, probably the wooden tip of the sheath, too. The finishing on the sheath is pretty shit (sry gramps) and I've been and still am working on it. The knife is all good, though, 2.5" blade.

I live in Canada, so it didn't see too much use till about april. But I've been using since then on just about everything. It comes razor shorp out of the box and the edge lasted me a while before I gave it a sharpen recently.

I don't do batoning with it since I always have a hatchet on me, but so far it's great. I love it.

Today I was trying to get to a trout stream through some kudzu and fell off of an obscured ledge about 10 feet. landed softly in more kudzu and thorns but couldnt stand b/c I was so wrapped up. Cut myself out with the delica.

I imagined I was in that scene with the octopus thing outside of Moria in LOTR.

For a long time I used a Glock Model 78 Field Knife. It's a solid knife for how dirt cheap it is. A better option than a Mora, I think. My only regret it buying it in the saw-back version. It's held up to a lot of abuse, but it's ultimately a $30 knife designed with GI grunts in mind. It's now a part of my trunk-crate.

I bought a Buck 119 to replace that. A small step up in price, but still an inexpensive knife. For the cost though, it's great, and a definite step up from the Glock 78. It has some flaws, but it gets sharp, looks pretty nice, feels good in the hand, comes with a good sheath, and it's an American classic with a good warranty.

I feel it's about time to get a serious knife though, and I'm debating between an ESEE-4 (Uncoated) or a Fallkniven (F1L or S1L). I'd really like to get a Fallkniven SK6L, but I can't justify spending that kind of money.

One for wittling/carving if the feeling arises, a machete for trail blazing, a knifesaw for branch work (great when making fires), and a hatchet paired alongside a felling axe in case the need arises. You can never have too many sharp/pointy things :D Though they do tend to weigh you down (if that's one of your concerns)

That blade is a fairly standard stainless, if it's heat treated reasonably well it'll be fine. I have several gerber knives and they all suck donkey balls because they aren't heat treated properly. Good luck getting that thing to hold an edge. The paracord handle, however, sucks monumentally regardless of QC. That's because it's a paracord handle. They just aren't comfortable for demanding or extended work.
