Should i post about hunting here or elsewhere?
I've never been hunting and i would like to, I'm looking through what i have to go through to hunt in my state. I want to know what /out/ hunts and what /out/ hunts with.

I don't hunt yet but working on my archery so I can kill feral bigs with primitive arrows. Might make a crossbow too, cause it's easy and much easier to be accurate with. And a medieval siege crossbow would be bad ass to hunt with lel.

hunter here. I use a R700 chambered in .30-06 for most of my game, typically Deer and Elk. Although I'm pretty in experienced only been hunting about 2 years. I'm learning from my father. Anyway I'll answer what questions you have that I know.

You'll probably have to go through some kind of Hunter Education course to learn some of the regulatory stuff. It's a little different for each state. They typically offer such classes on weekends a few times a month throughout the year, you just have to keep an eye out for them.

Mostly small game with 12ga and 20ga for now.

Met a hunter qt last week in the province who's more into big game, so I might start hunting durr or moose this year with my .308 if that works out.

Yes, this is where hunting goes, though for a gun you might want to try /k/.
I hunt deer with a .308 and birds (grouse, ducks, doves) with a 12 gauge.

Mainly small game because I can't be bothered to go for large game; the joke is I have all the rifles and equipment for large game.

Anyhow I use a 20 gauge (Benelli Nova) or a .38 Special (M92 Rossi) for grouse and rabbit. Personally I found the .22LR and the .410 too light as if you have a less than ideal shot placement you end up wounding the animal and it fucks off into the brush.

Shit happens and sometimes running shots is all mother nature offers you. Of course since this 4chan I am sure I'll be called a faggot :^)

On another note, rounds like .22 Magnum or .223 can really destroy a lot of meat on an animal so avoid polymer tipped ammo and aim for the head.

This will be my second hunting season. I mostly focus on bowhunting deer. Partly because I enjoy the bow more than rifles and partly because it's a 45 minute drive to go where I can practice with a rifle whereas I can shoot my bow in my back yard every day. Not to mention where I hunt is a WMA and only bucks can be taken with rifles. Since I'm mostly in it for a connection to the meat I consume I don't want to limit myself if I come across does.

Granted, stalking and ground hunting deer with a bow from the start has been kind of jumping off into the deep end, but I get a lot more out of it than just the animal.. which I have yet to get. Going out into the woods, tuning into it, being mindful of my movements, learning to read the woods, the deer sign, and all has brought me so much more than just potential meat in the freezer. I have gotten close - about 22 yards once and 12 another time - but they were poor shots so I didn't take them. So I feel that I will someday receive a deer, but it's okay if that's still a season or two away. Sitting on an outcrop or in a deadfall blind is almost a meditative experience and connecting with the deer almost spiritual.

I also hunt squirrel with a .22. If I knew where I could go for rabbit around my area I'd hunt them as well.

Don't get fixated on "getting a deer/elk/rabbit/whatever." You'll have days when you'll never see them or days when you don't get good shots. Sure, it's disappointing, no lie. But you're out enjoying nature. Each time you go out, recap what you learned that day... even if it was from mistakes. That lets you grow from a "bad day," making it actually kinda good.

I usually go on a deer hunt on thanksgiving vacation, and occasionally hunt rabbits. I use a 30-06 for the deer and either a .22 or a 12ga for smaller game.

First season. Been hunting cottontail with a Beretta 391 every weekend since July 1st. No luck. I'm blaming it on the drought.

Dove season starts next week. Quail season two weeks after that. I've come across both in my quest for rabbit.

Not the anon you were talking to but you can hit it with the edge of the shot pattern once you know your shotgun and how it patterns. I used to do it all the time with squirrels on my mothers farm.

Small game: hare, rabbits, pheasant, doves, ducks
With: O/U 12 gauge, 32grams shot shells number 4/5. Doves usually shot with 28 grams. Rabbits sometimes taken with a .22lr

Bigger game: Roe deer (my favorite), wild boar and when needed foxes (mange/vermin controle.
With: CZ550 in 7x64

Most bigger game is taken from a high seat, as is common in europe, but I love to stalk when given the chance.

I make sure everything I shoot is being eaten, either by myself or friends. Also I do not mind coming home empty handed, it's a part of hunting aswell. You harvest what the land can spare and invest time in making sure the land is in optimal condition for the animals.
