You mean sanitizing. Purify means to remove. This just kills and leaves the stuff in the water. It is a pretty old way of sanitizing water. A lot of people put the water into a clear bottle and place a reflective surface behind it and aim it at the sun. The UVs kill the bacteria in the water after x amount of time.

Keep in mind than one of the down-sides of UV sterilization is that micro-organisms which might be on the dark side of a piece of dirt or even something smaller are far less likely to be killed or denatured by UV light, because the UV won't reach them.

Unless I'm mistaken, you don't drink the filthy tarp-water but instead use the device as a giant magnifying glass to flash boil the water held under it in seconds rather than minutes over a fire.
