I'm looking for a new trekking backpack, I've always used an +-60l Active Leisure I inherited from my dad, served me well for years, but it's starting to fall apart.

I use a maxpedition falcon for trips like that. it's a bit on the heavy side, but it's by far the most versatile and durable daypack I have ever had. I even use it for trips up to a week during the summer, when I don't need that many gear

The Kestrel is great for overnight trips, but really overkill for dayhikes. I use a Marmot Kompressor 18 summit pack for day hikes... that one can be folded into its top compartment, which is nice when you do backpacking of the urban persuation (i.e. travelling from city to city, staying at hostels and all that jazz), as you don't need to lug around your heavy main pack when you won't to explore a city or go for day hikes.

I might be wrong, but Kelty volume numbers seem to be a bit off... I have a 70+10 (can't be arsed to look up the name, might be a Coyote), and it really isn't or at least doesn't feel substantially bigger than my Osprey Kestrel 38... I could be pulling this out of my arse, but I don't think the usable volume is much higher than 60 litres.

Bought a 5.11 COVRT 18 backpack a few months ago. And a couple of weeks ago, runnin' around innawoods, the left should strap chest buckle came off and I didn't realize until I was out.

It must have snagged on a branch or something, but it wasn't noticeable to me, so how much force could have ripped it off my pack?

I thought these things were supposed to be tough?

Right, but it simply isn't the way to go...as soon as you do an overnight you need at least a 50% increase in volume for your sleeping system...

And daypacks usually aren't all that expensive, so there really isn't much of a reason to compromise here.

No, you should get a 50L pack (tops) and buy a lighter/less bulky sleeping bag/tent/stove. I can get 3 days worth into a 35L bag, but I've had a lot of practice. 70L is getting into the lower end of expedition size.

I do well with 48L and strapping my sleeping pad to the outside of the bag for up to 5 days in the pacific north west summers.

I have the Osprey Talon 33. I am about to start solo backpacking with my dog more so could anyone recommend a good 1 person ultra light tent that will fit in it with enough room for minimalist gear? I own a Sierra Designs 2 man tent and its great when I have someone to split the load with but not if I am by myself.

The kind where its all soft and there's the hard plastic bit right at the end, I sew the strip onto the end of the strap, roll it up, loop the velcro around it a couple times and it catches back onto itself.

I have been using this for week or longer trips with my wife. It is a Xenith 105 large, it expands to 114 liters which while huge helps an awful lot because my wife has back issues. I was actually thinking of picking up a cilogear backpack soon or a zimmer built pack. Recently I have started to replace my sleeping system with more cottage industry type things and things have gotten very light.

The only real reason I have it is because of my wifes bad back and because I personally like longer trips. If you like spending a week to two weeks out the Xenith will be great, same with if you have to carry more of the supplies due to whatever issues are present it is a good choice. That being said if I were to go hike PCT I would chose a Zimmerbuilt pack or Cilogear. Complaints about shear size aside though, the pack is fantastic and fits very well. If you life close to an REI they should have most Osprey backpacks in stock, just remember that REI is only for trying packs on and the internet is for buying them.

That's a dick move in my book and that behavior is slowly killing the retail stores... sooner or later there won't be a place to try out gear or shops will charge you for that and expert advice.

How much of a difference does it make, anyway? Especially when you figure in that Osprey products have a lifetime warranty... In the big picture, the 10 or 20 bucks that you usually save really don't make much of a difference.

I use pic related, and have for about 10 years now.

I want something new with more space and maybe another compartment. I will mainly use it for Uni, but I also need to carry my gym gear (sneakers and shorts) in it. I didn't want to carry a duffel everyday because my shoulders would probably hurt after a while of carrying that shit.

I will also use it for packing my shit when I travel, which generally means packing about a 5 day change of clothes. That probably shouldn't be an issue since I have fit all that into this Jansport before.

I don't want something massive, though. But I wouldn't mind going a step above this size. What do you guys think? I don't really want to spend more than $30-50, though I know I will probably get a shit bag for that. Thank you.

I am more than willing to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on gear and other things, what I am not willing to do is pay the markup that REI slaps on thinks because while I enjoy the outdoors I dont enjoy paying the REI yuppie tax. It is mindless consumers like you that make it so retailers like REI can just raise prices, you accept it without question and still spend your money their because of "muh brick and mortar stores." How laughable. I have a big kelty external frame pack that is great for hiking with lots of gear. People don't seem to like external frame packs. I know they aren't as good for climbing, but they are cooler and make hauling a heavy load on a long hike much easier.

Went on a 24 day to Argentina. Mountaineering school basically. Purchased all my own gear. Literally wouldn't have been able to afford the trip of I paid retail. Steep and cheap, backcountry, theclymb and moosejaw is what I used. Then for shits and gigs I added up the msrp of all my gear and then compared to what I paid... 1,200$ price difference... But ya you're totally right I really wouldn't have saved that much.
