Hey /out/,
Any other tree climbers on here? I'm an arborist and been climbing professionally and recreationally for about 5 years now.

What setups are you using? SRT/DdRT? Etc.

This is my set up once I was in the canopy of the douglas-fir. Ascended SRT with distel hitch, hand ascender with footloop and Petzl pantin foot ascender.

How do you get the ropes in the tree before you start climbing? I've never understood that shit.

You use a throwline, which is a thin line with a throw weight. You throw it through the crotch in the tree and then pull your climbing line through.

It's actually rated pretty high, usually about 500 lb. breaking strength.

Usually for large trees, climbers will use a crossbow or a BigShot (big sling shot designed for this purpose). I was travelling so I couldnt bring either so I had to throw into the douglas-fir by hand which sucked. The first branches were at 60' and it took a long time and the throw that actually hit was kind of sketch.

Once you're up in the tree you can advance your line since you have a lanyard (basically a smaller climbing system) so you are always tied in.
