I'm faced with the prospect of possibly moving to East TN soon. Knoxville area, specifically. I'm in the flat, corn-fielded, congested Midwest right now. What can any anons that live there, or have lived there recently, tell me about life beyond tourism in that area? How far do you have to get from the city to get into some GSMNP wilderness?
I'd been to the Gatlinburg area a few times as a younger man, so I only really remember skiiers and kitschy shops on cobblestone streets. I also grew up in the South so I remember what it's like to deal with dangerous snakes, spiders, humidity, etc. What can you tell me about the city itself, how fishing licenses work in TN, and how canoe/kayak paddling stacks up to other places? What do you like or dislike about the area? How bad is the "redneck" factor? No offense to the good ole boys, but I got my fill of the uneducated, overweight backwoods sorts. Thanks in advance.
