Y'all gotta get yourselves a can or two of smoked oysters! Shit's cash. I prefer Crown Prince, or any brand really that packs them in olive oil. They're usually packed in cottonseed oil which isn't very good and is also hilarously toxic. It's rare to find them in olive oil but when you do maaaan-oh-man

So I am eating these... look down at the ingredients.. not expecting much I mean sardines have a long shelf life. Well, ofcourse they just gotta add a healthy spoonful of good ole MSG to the sardines. Never purchased from this company again.

i like these. another fishy food i like is canned/pickled mackerel. i try to get out and catch a few each summer. cut the head off, gut em, clean em, stick em in a canning jar add vinegar, boil it. its great served cold. scoop out some and put it on a cracker. shit is so good. also dont worry about the bones they become soft and easily eaten after the canning process.

I just tried those for the first time, not at all what I expected. It turned out alright though.

>lots of pepper

I chopped up the hotdogs really fine then just boiled everything till it was thick, Next time I make it, I will leave out the hotdogs and put in a can of roast beef or something, and maybe rice. Still, it cost ~$4 to make and kept me fed for two days, so I can't complain.

Adding kippers, mackerel and smoked tuna to my 'must try' list.

I'm no aficionado on canned meats but I've enjoyed Beach Cliff and Bumble Bee sardines. Pretty sure I've had a few other brands common to US grocery store shelves but haven't noticed much difference between them. I tend to prefer them in mustard but plain or in hot sauce is great too. Rediscovered potted meat and vienna/cocktail sausages again recently. I feel like I'm eating cat food pate with the potted meat but the taste is growing on me again.

ackchutally it's very toxic, except when processed for food/consumption it's not longer toxic (idunno the toxin is in the husk or something and food-grade stuff has all the husks removed before it's pressed). however, that means you might be trusting some cheap chinese factory to properly husk and process the oil so it doesn't contain toxins and we learn time and time again that factory food processing is indelibly unreliable

The toxin you're talking about is probably gossypol. It's not hard to keep out of the oil if you process the seed properly. US processed oil is pretty safe. Get fish canned in the US and you're fine. I live about 45 miles from what was and probably still is the world's largest cottonseed oil mill. They were serious about QC and cleanliness when I worked there. I had to quit not long after I started, though. All that fine lint tore my lungs a new one.

Open the tuna can, stick a piece non-scented paper into the oil, ignite it... after 15 mins. you will eat the best tuna ever.

I took some anchovies out with me this weekend. Very yummy, kind of like the bacon of the sea.

On the flip side, I brought a package of samon. It was gross. Anything taste good after a 10 mile hike with pack but damn that stuff had no flavor.

This thread reminded me of another reason why I love going /out/: I can eat as much as I want.

I really have to watch my calorie intake else I gain a bunch of weight in no time at all, so I usually can't follow any sudden cravings. Only time I will really relax that regimen is Christmas and when doing long hikes.

As someone that uses caught sardines/mackerel for bait hole pier fishing, I find it hard to stomach. I just gag every time I try to eat canned sardines. Because of the smell I associate with nasty as fish guts.
Now anchovies and canned oysters, mussels, etc. I can handle and do snack on those.

Where do you guys drain the oil/juice when you're /out/ so as to not attract animals?

Doesn't that attract animals though? I realize you said "nowhere near I plan to sleep" but "leave no trace" and all that jazz.

What if you're/I'm backpacking in a nat'l park that has a fire ban and I'm using a hobostove? Can I just use that stuff as fuel, save it in a bottle, or what?

I don't camp when there's a fire ban, but if I were to do so for some reason I'd just dump the juice well away from camp, maybe in a stream.

it's biodegradable, it's food. Leaving food out in the woods isn't a big deal unless you're in bear country and camping right where you leave the food.
