need some advice /out/
Looking into getting a new axe. possibly grunsfor bruks. trying to decide between the
small forest axe (19inch)
Scandinavian forest axe (23 inch)
swedish viking axe (13 inch)
four-lugged chopping axe (23 inch)
british trade tomahawk (19 inch)
large carving axe (14.5 inch)

need a good general purpose axe, dont want something to large but want to be able to split wood with it. Not massive logs but still be able to split medium sized things. And i would like it to be able to fit on my pack and not a massive 35 inch one. any input from anyone who have used some of these?

Scandinavian Forest Axe is too big for putting into a backpack, IMO. I think I'm going to be getting the small forest axe when I can afford it.

The carving axe will have geometry suited to - no prizes for guessing - carving. Not splitting.

Don't go getting complicated and getting a viking axe or anything like that. It won't work for what you need it for. Just just a nice, plain axe.

The axe wont be used onlu for splitting. It will be used for everything. It is designed for carving but looks like it would split decently. And I wont be putting inside my pack. It will ve straped on the outside with my compression straps.

Basically a big hatchet, long enough for two handed use, small enough to for a backpack, suited to splitting smaller logs.
If you go for the bigger forest axe it's not going to be as transportable. Viking/carving axes and tomahawks are clownshoes for general use and splitting.

I've got a small forest axe from them. It does exactly what you're asking for. Thing is great and fits just right in a bag.

Don't bother with the bottom four axes they're novety or niche use only.

I almost feel the 23 inch is to large and the 19 inch is to small. And i know gransfor bruks are pricey, but i just love the craftsmenship and look of them. I've considered a fiskers because i know they are very popular and "indestructable" but when i look at an axe i like to see something with a handle i could fix while innawoods. because i have overswung and cracked an axe handle at night once or twice before. any axe handle that is round and not the usual oval shape or whatever, to me, is much easier to recreate, one of the reasons i kinda like the 4-lugged chopping axe. I've made an axe handle by hand once before, it came out alright but nothing i'd be thrilled about using for an extended period of time

19" is plenty, IMO. I know that the longest I could fit into my backpack is about 23 inches, and then it would be pretty cumbersome. I use a 15.5" long axe right now, but I'm thinking of buying the larger handle and replacing the old on. That'd bring it to 17.5".

Honestly This.

I always have two moras on my person in separate sheaths at all times. One is for cutting cables, the other is for batoning. It has never let me down and has gotten me out of some sticky situations while clearing paths of dead trees/stumps.

Moras are literally the only blade you need. Sharper than diamonds and I can drive a Toyota over them and they won't even bend. Great for batoning and cutting thick material.

You'd be surprised what you can get done with the 19 inch handle. I'd echo what the others have said regarding it coming down to either the scandi or the small forest axe too. I don't have pictures to show you or anything but I've felled pine trees with the small forest axe where the root cut has been a good 15 inches across, you just need to know how to utilize what you've got.

Alright, if you guys can stop arguing for a second I've got a question about choosing an axe myself. Decided not to make a new thread, despite the shitposting in this one.

I've decided it's time to buy a quality hatchet / axe. I want it for backpacking and camping of all types.

Looking at the Gransfors website, it came down to three models that I'm having a hard time choosing between.

The Outdoor Axe, which is 14.5" long and 1lb. This places it into hatchet size category, roughly the size of an Estwing Leather Sportsmans Axe (what I used to think was the best). Size and weight wise, this seems great. No more difficult to carry than a machete, but more useful for the environments I'm in. I like the handle guard too.

The Small Forest Axe, which is 19" long and 2lb. This is twice as heavy and a little longer. Probably not much more cumbersome to carry size wise, but the weight can't be ignored.

The Hunters Axe, which is 18.5" and 2lb. Almost identical to the small forest axe in size and weight, but slightly different handle geometry and head shape. I'm not sure what the advantages, or disadvantages to this would be over the others.

Other than these, any other brands I should look at?

What do you guys think? I only want to buy once. Pic related, the Outdoor Axe.

I was quite interested in the outdoor axe but I rather went off it after seeing one in the flesh. I'm not sure I don't think I registered quite how small it was. Plus I'm not really sure the metal collar will help much if you over-strike with it because the beard of the axe head sits right down over it - if that's not what that's for, anybody feel free to correct me here and also the price seems on the high side but that's obviously up to yourself to look at.

The Hunters axe has the rounded poll which is useful for skinning and the idea is that you can then use the axe to help process your kill. I thought about it myself but really it's designed for deer or larger. Also I felt I'd get more use out of the normal poll on the small forest axe for pounding wooden stakes and plastic felling wedges at work.

As for other axes, the big two chainsaw dealers are putting out some nice ones, that's Husqvarna and Stihl - especially Stihls 1926 series. You might also consider Autine, Best Made, Hultafors or Wetterlings. There are no doubt people near you that'll make axes to order, small forges or hobbyists, have a look and see who's in your country and there's also the people who will SWEAR by buying a vintage axe and restoring it but this is a lot of work and can be hit and miss if you don't know just what to look for.

As you can see there are a lot of options outside of Gränsfors Bruks. I may have been a little lazy in my decision to just pick up a Small Forest Axe but it was support for a local store too so what the hell.

I definitely understand how small the Outdoor Axe is, I'm just not sure which size class I should be looking at. I'll probably mostly use my tool for splitting and limbing, maybe clearing a little brush around camp, rather than felling or idk, building a log cabin. I have a decent pack-able saw for cutting larger things should the need arise.

You make a good point on the Hunters axe. Given the small amount of large game hunting I do, and that I typically do final processing of the animal at home rather than in the field, I can probably eliminate that as an option.

I've looked at Autine, Best Made, and Wetterlings. The Autine offerings don't tickle my fancy for some reason, the Best Made are essentially re-branded Council Tool offerings and a little large for my purposes I think. The Wetterlings are a contender, but I've read the QC and fit & finish is better on the Gransfors. That's why I had come to look at their offeings specifically. I'll check out Hultafors.

I'm not really wanting to get into buying an old axe head and reworking it. Sounds like a nice project that could yield a good result, but I have enough projects on my hands as is.

Either would certainly do the job since you're bringing a saw anyway. I would think it comes down to what you want to try and fit in or on your pack. If you're limbing dead trees for firewood I'd suspect you'd find it easier with the Small Forest Axe as well as the splitting but of course it won't fit as nicely in your pack as the Outdoor Axe. I'm sure you'd maybe worry less people carrying it too - I don't know if that's a consideration for you?

Those are the ones I drool over, though the Scandi Forest Axe is what I typically carry if I'm planning on cutting a tree innawoods.

For basic innawoodsing I actually use an old Stanley Shingler's Hatchet that I picked up at a flea market for $2. The hammer poll is great to have since most hatchets and axes do not have a hardened poll for hammering. A lot of fucktards use their non-hardened polls for hammering and end up fucking up the whole head.

if you crack an axe across the throat of it then yeah it's gonna snap. If used by a non retard there should be no problems. The fiskars is a bad choice for splitting though because it's so hard it just chips the edge if you hit any rock

Fibreglass sucks dick for outdoors in terms of repairability; especially considering the retarded ways they attach the head to the handle a lot of the times. You couldn't even make a wooden handle if you wanted to. Not that you should need to replace it if you use your axe correctly but the ability to is there and that's what matters.

Yea ive done it. Came out ok but head was a little lose. Couldn't really wedge it properly with what I had. Only used a knife for the whole thing. If I was at my garage I probably could of made it a little easier and wedged it properly. Its really not THAT hard. Just keep whittle the top down, fit it on, whittle more, fit on. Repeat until it fits down far enough. If you have a folding saw id imagine would ve a little easier to wedge it out

Yea using it properly you will have no problems. But mistakes can happen. If its dark and you havnt built your fire yet, and your working in low light its easy to ovet swing and crack a handle. I may just carry a knife specifically designated for batoning. Lighter and I can replace the spot with something else.I know batoning is like shunned here but I don't see what the big deal is. If you got a thick knife meant for batoning why not save some weight and carry something else more useful?

In all honesty a hatchet will not do near as good of a job that a full axe will do. If you get the wooden handled ones they are only a few pounds heavier as well. The only inconvenience is the carry in, which really is not that bad.If you're just backbacking you can stick with a machete or collapsible saw. They will be lighter and easier to pack.

For general purpose I have a Fiskars x5.
It is a small axe
>228 mm long
>head weighs 390g
>total weight: 480g

It comes with a pouch so you can have it in your belt and is really good if you need something to carry with you. It is small enough to be able to have in a backpack.
It doesn't have the weight to cleave through a large log with a knot but I usually burn those whole if it is a campfire.

I got mine from American Traders in VT for $130 shipped. They listed it as in stock online but when I ordered it they had to have it shipped from Sweden. I got it though and not for $300. I think there was also a forestry supply company that was selling them for similar prices.
