I have one of these sitting in my amazon check out, but can't pull the trigger yet. is it necessary to buy specific oil, or is getting it wet enough?

Get an EZE-LAP 510. Has a 400 grit fine side and a 1200 grit super fine.
DMT probably has a similar one.

For camp and home use I like the the Norton IB8.
Its a combination India/SiC stone. IB6 is the same, except in 6"

Ragnar from RagweedForge has some Finnish whetsone thing that looks pretty decent, though I have not tried it.

If you use oil once, you can't use water later.

I personally like most stones dry because I like to feel what I'm doing.
