Do you need pliers too? You could consider a SOG Powerlock, it can be opened easily one handed and can cut through anything you'd be using while fishing.

Otherwise I'd get some side cutters they use for model kit building.

i bought some Camillus "Titanium Bonded" knife today from ChinaMart. Ten bucks.

i cut down a branch with it, it was sharp, it carved the branch up pretty good. then it broke the tip off of the blade.

Its pretty light, to the point where the blade feels like the only weight on it. feels bendy too.

For ten bucks it might be OK for a one-time use deal but i think id have better put the money toward a Mora or a Buck Paclite.

Exactly. It is a tool AND a weapon. It is functional as a tool, yet maintains minimal protection (groove in place of crossguard) so it can be used as a weapon if need be.

I really doubt that notch is used for catching blades, the kukri is really short, the notch is small so I doubt it would work against anything bigger than a knife.

This one? I bought it on my first long (+1week) solo hike on the Padjelanta trail in northern Sweden. The small shop which is more like a shed had a hand full of knives on display and I bought the fanciest one. Although quite crude compared to other sami knives with intricate art work, but they cost 3-4x more.

I later read a book about sorcery, healing (especially the ability to stop bleeding wounds with thought power) among the sami and the northern region of Scandinavia. In the book they included a few interviews with known healers and one in particular caught my interest because he seemed sympathetic and very active in his practice. Anyhow I searched the internet to see if I could find any more info about the man, and found out he also makes knives. I found a picture of one knife which reminded very much in design the one I had bought. I checked the initials carved on the sheath and indeed it was the very same.

I rock the USMC kabar, its a great knife for backpacking in my opinion and I got it because my buddy that got his legs blown off in Afghanistan used it to dig up IED's and still has his knife, with some sharpening and cleaning his works amazing. I figured slamming it into dirt and rock for 1+ years and still holding an edge was a pretty good torture test. The only difference of my knife is I have the black kraton handle for grip

Gerber LMF? That's a winner. Gerber has gone down hill in recent years, especially with the Bear Grylls line of shit. But the LMF? Damn fine knife. It's respected. It's a tough little fucker that is affordable and simple. I'm not crazy about partial serrations, I prefer plain edges. But a great gift none the less.

Ah, perfect. See above video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja5BiEpa4n4). Bit of a warning though, don't sharpen your serrations that way. You'll need a rod for that. Hold the sheath firmly, then gently drag the plain edge through.

I've handled those, the Nessmuk and the Bushlore. They're all good blades.
Kephart would be best for fine work, Nussmuk is best for meat and game, Bushlore is brst all rounder and more heavy duty.
