Mainly on the BushcraftUK forum.
They seem quite down on the Mora crook knives, I've read a couple of things saying the bade has come loose with no way to resecure it. I've also read that the Moras have an unnecessary bevel on them.
Not sure if it's just the amateur makers on there trying to drum up business for their own creations or if I really would be better off with a different brand.
I don't really know any other reputable makes other than Mora.
I'll probably end up getting pic related unless somebody can recommend something better.

I'm not that person. But I personally have had a Laplander break teeth off and become dull after only about 5-10 cuts. This was on green wood (I do tree work for a living, and took one to work to give it a test run). I would never take one into a survival situation, in my experience it would not last long enough to be useful.

My Silky on the other hand, is a year old and still as sharp as the day I bought it.

Really? Mine is sharp as hell, and it might not have cut through a forest but I've cut through 6 inch thick pine with it (I know, soft wood) and also some unidentified deciduous wood, also about 6 inches thick, multiple times. Aside from that, I've gone through lots of hazel.

I've not had it for very long, in fairness.

I attached a picture of the Laplander in question. I was wrong about teeth breaking off entirely, but if you look closely you can see that some of the tips have rounded/broken off. I believe I was cutting Ashe Juniper at the time, which is a bit harder than pine though not particularly hard wood overall. Unfortunately my Silky is at work, so I don't have it with me for a comparison shot.

What the hell were you using it on? Concrete bollards?
I've had a laplander for over three years, ever since the bods over at BCUK recommended it to me, and it's still powering through anything I put in front of it with only cosmetic wear to show for it.
Silky could be better if you're using it all day, every day in the course of your job where transporting it isn't an issue but for camping/bushcrafting purposes I'd choose Bahco every time.

I don't understand why the transportation issue keeps getting pushed. Is it that hard to pack a bag properly? Its not like it takes a whole lot to secure folding saw. Put a rubber band around it if you're that worried about it. How do you pack your axe, or your knife?

That said, if it works for you, great. I am merely sharing my own experiences so that others may make an informed decision.

I assumed they were broken because rakers/depth gauges are not typically present on hand saws. I will have to try cutting with it again, though I do remember it feeling duller towards the last couple cuts when I stopped using it.

I don't oil my blades as a rule, I use linseed oil on the leather and store them in the sheath.
I also get silicone grease from work (plumber) so that's what I use to lube the mechanism on my folders.
Both are food safe and I like the price. Linseed also darkens the leather whichI like.

I have no experience buying sharp things, but I occasionally used a machete for some years in a open space management job for cutting through brush. I'm not working there any more, but I'd like to obtain one for myself, as there's a greenbelt behind my house that gets mowed really irregularly and the trails are often overgrown (tall grass, mostly).

You're not going to "reforge" anything.
If you've got your heart set on it then you need to remove the plastic (crush in a vise then smash with a hammer/masonry chisel) drill a couple of holes in the tang, add wooden scales and metal pins, and epoxy it all together.

Personally, I'd just keep it for a loaner/beater knife.

I carry a saw, an axe and a knife with me. The axe isn't some massive felling axe, it's got a 19" handle and it's used for rough carving or for splitting logs which I cut with the saw. I never use wood any thicker than about 6 inches. The knife gets used for finer carving work or getting the fire actually started in the first place.

Helle Temagami knife (at least the blade; the handle is custom) which is 4.25" long if I remember rightly. The saw is a Bahco laplander and the axe is a Hultafors Agdor.

Depends on the price range.

Low price is the smiths try-hone. Coarse med fine Arkansas stones. It's free hand though.

High price is the edge pro apex or the wicked edge. Essentially takes out human error.

Not sure about a mid price range

Colorado, Denver area. I go hiking all over the state but I just saw my first bear while hiking today, cut my hike short.

I'm thinking i'll want a fixed blade. I dont intend on it being a do everything knife, unless there are some fixed blades out there that do everything

and seeing as i only have a .22, a knife will likely be more useful against a bear than my target pistol

I wouldn't even bother with the 15" sven. In that case get the bahco. It's lighter and more compact and does an equal or better job.
The sven is maybe 30% faster to cut with. Good blade on that saw. The bahco gets stuck on larger pieces of wood and is more tedious. I use my sven as a more permanent camp saw and the bahco in an excursion camp setting.

Now that I'm thinking of it bear spray is your best defence but if you want a knife that would work to fend off dangerous game and work as a do all type knife get a cold steel bushman and make a strong hiking stick that you already shaped to fit the socket handle of the knife so you can use it as a spear

As a bonus the bushman is an ok knife, its cheap and strong enough for batoning or other abusive tasks and with a short wooden handle attached it will out chop any knife of similar size

The blade and tension bar go inside the crossbar, which goes into one upright, which goes into the other upright.

The blade on the opinel is decent carbon steel compared to unknown chink shit(metalurgy fags could tell you more)
It's customisable, a lot of people like to reshape the handles.
It'll be more comfortable to use for long periods than a gimicky swiss knockoff.
It will keep a better edge.
It's thinner than the blade on a swiss which makes it better for fine work.
It's a simpler design, less to malfunction.
You can raise a spark off the spine which gives you an extra firelighting option.

I keep a swiss in my pocket for the other tools and gadgets but an opinel 6 when I'm going innawoods.

I'll go out on a limb and argue that the only real difference between a Granfors forged on a massive trip hammer and a hand-forged ax are the tools and basic techniques used. Even then, the major difference would be if you are dealing with a traditionally made ax with a welded-steel bit. Or a mono-steel ax with a hardened bit, a welded-steel bit isn't necessarily going to be a higher quality either. The weld can fail under extreme use, especially if the smith is inexperienced or just sloppy that day. Despite that, you can have a hand-forged ax for a lot less then a Granfors if you shop around. Some of the people who forge them are probably as close to Dwarves as you could be expected to find as well.

If you are buying a 'hand forged' axe (>implying there are smiths left who don't use the same pneumatic hammers GB use) for less than a GB axe, you have to start questioning the likely quality of the axe.

Regardless, I've literally never heard of a GB axe fail, even after decades of constant use, and I'm happy to pay a little more for a tool I know I can depend on in the best and worst of situations.

Update...Axe just arrived from Rutabaga.com. It was only $130 + $10sh which was better than Amazon. Also was shipped 2 day priority mail, shipped day of the order, and came on time. Axe looks great, book/sheath everything good. Overall seems Rutabaga is a great place to buy a GB.

I'm looking at the Vaughan riggers axe. Curious if anyone has a take on it, or any riggers axe for dat innawoods application. I don't need something to full on take down trees and it looks like it would lend well to bushcrafting and finer work. Also the hammer for tent stakes or driving a wedge if need be.

I wouldn't bother taking it out with me though. A regular hatchet will be more versatile.
I know some people use the poll of their hatchet to hammer pegs and stuff but it's not recommended practice. Grab yourself a baton if you need to hammer them in. Nine times out of ten I can just push them in with my foot.

Jaguar Bushcraft knife by Highlander.
Fits all those criteria except it's a shallow hollow grind rather than a scandi which makes it better for fine work.
You can pick them up for the same price as a Condor. The ferro rod is bretty gud too. Would recommend.

In all honesty, it's hard to justify getting this over a Mora, but if you don't mind dropping a little extra cash, it's a fine blade.

The elite version gives you a choice of plain or combo edge (the seal pup is partially serrated only), and a number of finishes (satin or TiNi, regular pup is powder coated), and has jimping on the spine.

Tacticool is a matter of preference, really. I like how it looks, and the handle is comfortable to use. Also, the nylon sheath is one of the best sheaths you can get for the price - tripple stitched, molle compatible.

You can baton with it if you really need to - there are plenty videos on YT that show what it can do.

Nah, this is the right place for asking chainsaw stuff too. Most people on this board are more survival oriented rather than forest work oriented when they talk about axes and stuff though.

I'm obviously new to /out/, I'm basically a mountain biker and I tend to pick very unpopulated trails so I end up having to do most of the cleaning myself.
So far I have been using a small and a large bow saw, knives and a small axe.
I'm rather busy so I'm looking to speed up the whole process, I also wish to advance my trail maintenance experience.
Otherwise I have lots of experience with all sorts of hand and power tools but I haven't really tried working with a chainsaw much.
Besides chainsaws seem to be a very touchy subject when it comes to lending among friends and colleagues so I'm set on buying a small one to start off and get acquainted to the whole process.

Main reason for the chainsaw is fallen trees over the trail. Sawsall would be too short.
Anything under 10cm is very fast with the bow saw anyway.

Mora 164 is about the best entry level crook knife.
Had mine for a couple of years and can't fault it.

i personally found the leatherman warranty to be extremely good earlier this year. brand new tool no questions asked. had first one for a couple years and misuse the shit out of it all the time in work. stuff broke and it developed play, new tool no fucking and about no charge. they said they don't bother repair them anymore, just replace.

leatherman wave is my preference but it all depends on what tools you need.

Ended up buying smallest stihl chainsaw.
Weak enough to be very safe, plenty strong to do small trunks with ease.
Did about 5h of trail cleaning on a very cluttered trail, feels good man.

I have a dumb question tho, the fuel consumption turned out to be very low.
I have been told 2stroke mix deteriorates in a month or 2.
After that can it be used anyway if adding oil again?

While a sawzall is a very useful tool, the reciprocating blade means it only cuts well when the material being cut is solidly clamped in a vice or nailed down in some way (such as 2x4s when doing home renovation work).

A chainsaw is right tool for the job.

Smart purchase, as for the vast majority of people, the smaller the chainsaw the better.

You ain't going to be in a lumberjack competition, so the smaller size and lighter weight makes using the chainsaw much easier and it will Stihl (get it?) cut thru anything you need to cut with ease.

Who ever felled that tree cut off the holding wood which is a very dangerous thing to do (mostly with large trees though) The holding wood acts like a hinge/guide for the direction of the tree falling and also prevents the bottom of the falling tree from popping backwards towards the cutter. Wish I saw this thread earlier. from personal experience I believe stihl to be the best trail saw available. Good that you want short as it takes time to get use to using thse powerful and dangerous tools (fun as hell though). I started off using a "turkey cutter" 8" stihl mostly useful for delimbing and felling small trees and eventually worked my way up to a 18" stihl for large trees such as Eucalyptus. Felling trees, bucking rounds have never been more fun. Any trees I find in a trail under a foot diameter I usually use a double bit, feel like a badass.
About the 2 stroke I wouldn't know, since when I use saw I usually use all the gas. But I do know that if you decide to not use the saw for a while to empty out the gas and oil from the reservoirs.
Have fun clearing trails and tell your wife anon says "happy trails".
