Is there a good website or infograph you can share that showcases popular edible plants in the wild?

I'm quite willing to upload photos of flora in environments where I live, so somebody can identify them and tell me if they can be eaten or not.

You'd need to do a bit of research on each to know what parts of the plant are edible then find what you can do to make them palatable if needed. My current faves are,

Lamb's quarters, which is so much like actual food when you eat it. I like it raw, but you can cook it like spinach too. Eat the leaves and young stems. Seeds are edible, but I use them for replanting. Plants under 12 inches are best until they bolt, but are still fairly good if taller and bolted.

Beaked Panicgrass, this is great for flour, bannock, and porridge. While the entire plant is edible (good for juicing I suppose, if you like grasses) the seeds are what I eat. You need to remove the husks and winnow them. Do get a good bit you'll have to put in a lot of work or have the right tools.

Wild Garlic and Wild Onion: Obviously. These are hard stem strains normally and not as easily processed for various food things than the store bought soft neck varieties. They just take some getting used to is all.

Queen Anne's lace, I mostly use the flowers for making wines and meads, but the roots of the 1st year plants are good to eat like parsnips/carrots. 2nd year roots are woody and inedible.

American Burnweed, I like the younger plants about 1-3 feet high max. They have more stem that doesn't have the white pity center yet and the leaves don't have the bitter notes just yet. I peel the stems and cut them into 1-2 inch sections. Both those and the leaves are great in stews. It does have a different smell and taste that some people find offensive though. It is one of those thing you love it or hate it.

Sunchoke, for me, these are standard garden vegetables for their tubers. They are a lot like water chestnuts and a really good crop, though they don't store as long as I'd like them to. Good raw or cooked.

Plantain, both plantains are great when their leaves are young an tender. I eat them raw in salads, but you can cook the too.

Dandelion, same as the plantains, these are best when the leaves are young and tender. I also fry up the flower and also make them into wine and mead.

Cattail, I use the pollen as a flour, the roots as a starch crop, and in spring the delicate centers of the shoots are really good and taste like a mild cucumber to me.

I'm not listing the fruit and berries because those are really obvious. I take sap from several types of trees and make syrup from them too. Maple is of course the best and it is super easy to collect and make.

so fucking stupid to think you wont need a field guide. If you're not experienced in foraging you're gonna have no idea what you're picking. Save yourself a lot of time to id in the field instead of bringing them all home to take pics of, then upload to the internet to ahve some random internet stranger tell you to eat deadly nightshade.

In my town out west we have "a ton" of edible plants but most are greens and honestly not worth digging

I had most luck with elderberries, soaproot, feral almonds and olives along with blackberries, rosehips and walnuts

Those look like rose hips to me. Take them off the stem. Cut off the top and the bottom. Cut it in half. Remove the seeds and the white, furry stuff which lines around the seeds and then eat the flesh.

In general you should note these things and make detailed photos of the flower/fruit, leaves and their arrangement. Ideally you'd also remember something about their location (in shade, very sunny, etc) and features on the various parts (serrated leaves, hairs on stem, number of and arrangement of petals, etc).

There are a couple of online tools that let you enter features of certain parts, and it tells you all plants that fit. But mostly they're limited to one part of the world and if you make a mistake, your plant might get filtered out.

Just get a field guide. They're not expensive and you can carry them around easily when going for a hike.

I recommend two books by Samuel Thayer..."Nature's Garden" and "Forager's Harvest" . Both were written in the last 5 years and the author has put a ton of effort into both hands on application and research into what others report, both truth and fiction. He's based out of Wisconsin, but the information should be useful for anyone in the eastern US.

I read through them the first time then realized the guy actually lives an hour or so away and holds classes. I should probably look into that.

It really depends on your area and how cold it gets. In winter there's hardly anything left since the bulk of edibles are greens that are seasonal. Like where I live, things like pine needles for a tea, maple sap to make maple syrup (40 gallons of sap = 1 gallon of syrup), a few types of tree bark, some grasses, and a few tree nuts are all that's left really. Even pine nuts are long hone usually.

Flora = Plants

You can easily survive without eating any animals in a non-snowy place. There's plenty of protein in vegetable matter to survive and thrive just fine.

You need around 0.35 grams of protein per pound of body weight (0.8 grams per kilogram). With my weight, I'd need to eat 61.92 grams (0.13lbs/0.05kg) of protein each day to maintain health.

In order to eat enough non-animal products to get that much protein a day, you could be eating quite a lot. It really depends on what you have available. For instance there are 100s of types of wild nuts, tubers, and seeds out there that are packed with protein (less so for tubers).

Let's break it down a bit,

61.92 grams required for me.
Amounts of vegetables that would contain a total of 61.92 grams of protein in them if you only ate that 1 item. All items are raw and undried when I can find info for undried (most nuts normally need to be dried to be removed from the shell easily), location, North America,

Pine Nuts: 0.97lbs

Lotus seeds/tubers: 3.4lbs/4.55lbs
Lamb's Quarters: 4.55lbs
Dock: 6.8lbs
