hey /out/
i've wanted to try backpacking for years now, but never got around to it. i've finally committed some funds and time to do it.

I found a solid 3-4 day trail near me, the only problem is, I have no gear. I need help picking the essentials.

I need:
- A cheap pack
- cooking supplies
- a hammock
- a sleeping bag
- any other suggested essential gear

and I would like to spend about $200. I have a bit more than that to spend, but that is what I would like to spend ideally.

Coleman brand fixed blade knife from walmart - 15$

MSR pocketrocket and small canister - like 25$ max

For other stuff, do you have a Big 5 near you? They have excellent sales on a weekly basis. REI has a better selection and bette
r quality, but is a lot more expensive.

* for only 3-4 days you can easily find a decent internal frame pack for 75 bucks or so. Go to a good outdoors store like Cabela's and ask an employee in the department to measure you for a pack.

Really only should need ONE small pot for cooking, I personally use a stainless steel MSR pot and MSR pocket rocket stove.
- a hammock
So long as you set it up right, and the connections aren't super cheap, you can get by with a 30 dollar hammock for short term.
- a sleeping bag
Depends on your climate, any random brand synthetic bag will do so long as it has an acceptable temperature rating to what you need. They are rated by temperature. Note that the temp rating referes to what temperature it will keep you ALIVE in, not necessarily comfortable.
- any other suggested essential gear

sleeping pad
Multi tool
wool socks
general tools (rope, first aid, head lamp, hand sanitizer, etc..)

I stopped getting the paper, so i don't get their weekly sale ad's anymore, but ill definitely look into that. thanks.

awesome! Thanks. do you think a sleeping pad is necessary if I go the hammock route, as opposed to the tent route? I would honestly prefer a tent, but they're just so much more expensive, especially for a decent backpacking one, compared to hammocks....

Oh yea, i forgot you mentioned wanting a hammock haha. No a sleeping pad is not necessary at all if you are using a hammock. I personally just use a tent so I included it on instinct :)

Hold up - that's true if the temperature doesn't drop below, say, 50 at night. Otherwise, you absolutely do want a sleeping pad in a hammock. Your weight will compress the sleeping bag below you, causing your underside to get very cold at night. Unless you live in Hawaii or the south this time of year, I'd consider a lightweight roll-up foam mat.

i should rephrase, i mean obviously it gets way colder but i don't plan on being out when it gets any colder than that

I think a sleeping pad is not necessary for a hammock even if it get's cold at night. What you could do is get a nice large wool blanket, fold it in half, and lay it down in the hammock. Lay on top of that, in a sleeping back, wearing thermal underwear and you will be VERY warm even in extremely cold temps depending on the quality of your bag.

So long as you have a couple layers of anything beneath you plus a sleeping bag and clothes, you'll be fine.

As a person who has hiked the AT for a week, I would not trust this pack. The frame does not look to be good at all/nonexistent. This seems to be a glorified/tacticool version of a middle school backpack. Don't buy this unless you want to hurt your back, or are traveling ultralight.

I say sleeping bag simply because you said you live in canada and it gets very cold at night. I know you said your budget is only 200 dollars, but for your scenario i would recommend spending at leasy 75 on a pack, and 100 on a sleeping bag.

I have a 100 dollar synthetic sleeping bag which is rated to 35 degrees. Considering the cold temps you will be experiencing I estimate you will need something that is about the same as that. You can possibly go cheaper on the sleeping bag if you lay down a couple layers in the hammock of good quality blankets+ wear quality fabrics when you sleep.

I have never been cold weather hiking but I own a set of under armor AND wool leggings+top and I imagine if you simply wore two layers plus any random bag you'd be pretty comfy regardless

For 40 dollars that's not bad if it's in good condition. You could find much better though. I personally have a 1 person tent which only weighs 1 and 1/2 pounds, whereas the one you posted weighs over 4 pounds.

A foam sleeping pad is much lighter than a wool blanket and will provide excellent insulation for ground sleeping as well. You can get a foam pad at wally for like 10 bucks. Also for a cheap twnt just get a ozark trail dome tent from walmart. The big 7x7 dome tent is only $25 and weighs around 4lbs. If you a manlet yku can get the scout 6x5 tent for around $15. It weighs around 2lbs. Caution, these tents are not for extreme conditions but for normal use they are fine.

Hijacking your thread OP, I just have a question.

So I have a 10x10 ft tent that I bought somewhat recently, and I was wondering if I could just go out into the woods and find somewhere to camp. But then I realized the woods are pretty dense with trees and logs and plants and whatnot and now I feel stupid for buying such a big tent.

So would I be able to just find a random spot in the woods and camp there with a 10x10 ft tent or would my tent be restricted to campsites?

Anyway. When me and the wifey go camping we take a 7x5 mountainsmith morrisson. Have never had trouble finding a spot and usually have room to spare. We usually go in National forests in the Appalachian area. Your forests may vary in tree growth.

If you're in the US, look into National Forests. Almost all of them allow dispersed camping. (Basically, you can camp anywhere without any kind of permit.)

I'm not really sure I've only ever been camping at campsites. It doesn't weigh that much actually but I can see how it would be torture hiking to a good spot, not that I'd be hiking that much. And I'm also a scared cat so I like camping with a few people. Should I just get a smaller tent?

Always take a tent one size up from the number of folks sleeping in it. So if it's just a tent for you, get a two man tent. Two people in there? Three man tent and so on.

You'll appreciate the extra room, trust me on that and you'll have space to stow your gear and clothes when you're not using it.

Nugget enterprises have a sleeping bag and some packs up for pretty cheap. I know they're sleeping bag is about $30 and it's warm. It doesn't pack down well or anything but hey it's cheap and warm. I haven't bought their packs but they didn't look terrible. For packs just please never buy Jansport unless you want to start pumping money into chiropractor appointments.

unless youre looking to get a hammock as your only method of sleeping, I would recommend giving that a miss. Enos are about 100 all told and that's a huge chunk of change. You can get a walmart one for about $25 if you want one to just hang out in. I use my walmart one for occasional warm weather camping and it does quite well, about a year in with that. just a thought.

You're both wrong.
Unless you are using an underquilt you need something to insulate the underside of you or the wind will just suck the heat out of you all night every night.
And assuming underquilts are about your whole budget I would suggest a cheap sleeping pad or the reflective plastic placed in the windshield of a car if you wanna be as cheap as possible

Counterpoint-- if OP is on a super tight budget, a medium or large ALICE pack is not a terrible place to start. Yeah yeah yeah, it's not the same as a modern backpacking tent-- but it sounds like he's looking for his first gear, and the ALICE isn't bad (and yes, I do have and use one myself).

Again, for the price you're looking to spend, OP, this is a good way to get started.

I would personally recommend the foil coated foam pat you keep in the window of your car. I haven't actually used one myself, but I have used a regular old sleeping pad and, whilst it improved the experience greatly, it was rigid and didn't give very much coverage. The foam pad you use in a car is thin and flexible, so I would wager that it would be more comfortable. The thickness (or lack thereof) of the windshield cover pad might not keep you as warm though, so it's probably worth trying out both options at some point.

External frame pack (check thrift stores)
mess kit

Essential gear:
Bear bag
Ziploc freezer bags for compartmentalized waterproofing
Two piece light weight rain suit (far superior to a poncho and about $100 thru campmor to start you off)
Waterproof pack cover- definitely want this
Stove- you can get a fancy stove, but I would make a good can stove. It took me a couple times to get it right. You can make the pot stand/windscreen out of other things like hardware cloth
