They have some design flaws but were ahead of their time when they first came out.

Earthships are difficult for amateur to build and get right as far as suitable temp levels go and can not be easily expanded upon, survival model, life ads contend. That and it will cost a fortune to stay on the fone with that dudes wife if u need any help.

Check out dirtbag / hyper adobe homes, much superior

You'd never get a permit for the plumbing like in the picture. The building code always ends up making this exotic stuff unrealistic ultimately.

Plus rural (the only hope of a location for something like that) living is boring as hell. It's a non-starter if you're single.

Actually you can build one pretty cheap.
For the high desert they are amazing.
I live in a ski resort and these things stay toasty warm all winter unless there are 3 days without sunshine(very rare in NM).

If you want to know what the dismantling of industry and 7 billion unregulated people going back to nature would look like just go to India or subsaharan Africa. The problem is "right" is an opinion that would be implemented by force. Self-reliance is not scalable. There's been a lot of effort going into improving high density farming like targeted fertilizing which reduces cost and runoff. Commercial production of organics as well.

I think they take a lot of good sensible concepts, many of which should be in building regulations, and package them in a shitty way. I feel the people building these don't really understand the concepts and so blindly copy without understanding why.

It reminds me a bit of "permaculture", a really solid idea that gets twisted into bullshit by people selling things or idiots turning it into ideology.

To be fair, pretty much every single one of these houses is constructed almost entirely with materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill and that's pretty much what you described in your second paragraph; they're effectively consuming nothing from that system you decry because they're using things that have already been produced, paid for and consumed by persons other than themselves.

If a child outgrows their shoes and needs a new pair, does it increase demand if they give their old pair to their cousin?
