I think they take a lot of good sensible concepts, many of which should be in building regulations, and package them in a shitty way. I feel the people building these don't really understand the concepts and so blindly copy without understanding why.
It reminds me a bit of "permaculture", a really solid idea that gets twisted into bullshit by people selling things or idiots turning it into ideology.
