So /out/, I broke my 30 year old estwing hatchet and need something new for processing large woods innawood. Leaning towards a new axe of some kind right now, Husqvarna's and Wetterling's are both well reviewed and sexy, but while perusing the net I realized a LOT of people are bringing a big ass knife of some kind instead of an axe these days. Now I can't see how building a shelter or chopping wood with what is basically a sword is easier than with a hatchet, and I already also carry an ESEE-3 for skinning and finer woodworking, but god damn would I love an excuse to own a Junglas. So, my question for you fine folks is: Small axe? big knife? mid sized machete? What do you use and why did you choose it?

It depends on the area you're in. If it's winter and cold, a big two hand axe is neccessity.

A small axe or hatchet is pretty much useless when processing large woods. Therefore it makes perfect sense to replace it with a big knife. A knife is lighter and it has a lot of blade area, which means it doesn't dull as fast. In many tasks a knife is easier to use than a hatchet.

Batoning is another story. Basically, by batoning a light blade you can make deep cuts, that would otherwise require the use of an axe.

Just make sure you don't buy a machete. Machetes, are made of soft steel and not good for cutting hard wood.

If I had to build a survival shelter, I would defenitely take a big knife. It's not very energy efficient to swing heavy axe to cut thousands of thin branches. When you get fatigue on your hands, it get's even dangerous. That's just my two cents.

It takes ages to cut through a big log with a small axe, like Estwing Sportsman. It's not something you want to do, or should plan to do. All smaller tasks can be done with a much lighter big knife, some tasks even better.

If you're planning to process large pieces of wood, why don't you take a large axe, that actually is suitable for the job? A small axe or hatchet is heavy and bulky, but not enough for serious work. There is no point to carry a hatchet just in case. Should the need arise, a knife can do what a hatchet can do.

Regarding weight, if you go picking something like an Esee Junglass or one of the big Becker blades you're only save about 15 ounces by not carrying a fucking scandi/small forest axe. I'm sure somebody will be cool enough to go and work that out properly or whatever but the weight argument IF you're going to go with big blades is pretty meaningless to me, especially for what you lose.

I carry a small forest axe, a folding saw and a small fixed blade and find it very easy to use all of these items in combination with each other. Cutting wood can be difficult or it can be hard and the tools you choose to use aren't even half the battle in my opinion. How you set up your working area and the timber you pick are much more important.

For me it always comes back to the back to the fact that in a pinch an axe can do more for me than just a knife can and it can do the job or a knife albeit poorly if required but I knife can necessarily to the job of an axe at all. Personal preference and what not as well of course.

I don't recommend a larger knife than Recon Scout. If you think it's not enough, then get a small two hand axe. Long blade breaks more easily and is hard for the wrist.

I'm a strong proponent of batoning. It's not about crazy people showing off their knives. It's about travelling light and still being able to split firewood.

I have heard this many times, but some bigger knives today are comparable to a small axe or at least a hatchet. IMO bigger is better, hatchet or a knife.

Completely agree.
Cutting through big logs is much more efficient with a saw of some sort though, lol. Beyond that my next choice would be the full size axe, followed by the knife. I'm not a big fan of the hatchet because I feel like it's too small to split wood efficiently and the axe is even better at cutting small branches on the ground. In the air the knife wins every time against both of them.

I have a lot more experience with the axe so I'm bias to the long handle and significant mechanical advantage offered as a result. A good splitting axe has a fairly broad face, good weight to it, hickory handle long enough to be worth swinging in a full circle.

A 4"-6" knife and a hatchet will take of 99% of camp chores but unless you're doing ultra lite eXtreme backpacking, no reason not to have whatever tools you want with you.

When both are used with one hand, a knife is easier and lighter to swing. When used with two hands, a hatchet wins.

Has anyone of you ever tried a big knife, like RTAK 2?

If you attach a lanyard loop and put your hand throug it, you don't need to hold on very tight when hitting. Also the blade can be sharpened at lower angle which makes it more effective. These things make a huge difference. I was sceptical first until I tried one. For me a knife has replaced a hatchet. That said, there is no alternative for a full sized two hand axe.

I split crap usually 5-6 inches in thick. Any thick bigger needs to be chopped into sections and just thrown into the fire. If you say you can't split any thing bigger than stick, you're a fuck tard who truly has not worked with a hatchet. With proper body position, and enough force. You can easily clear five inch thick logs, of knotted oak and shit, with ease.

Yes, I have not worked with a hatchet, other than hacking down a huge bush (practically many little trees) on the yard. The hatchet was some chinese one and didn't have enough weight. It was hard work and many times I hoped i had had a real axe or just about anything else.

I have far more experience with axes. I was no more than 11 years old when I first time splitted wood with some too-big-for-me swedish axe. What I learnt, is that weight counts. The axe or maul should be as heavy as you can handle. That's my opinion on wood splitting.

If I was to try a hatchet (again), what would you recommend? No Estwing or tacticool.

I really dislike this fad of people buying a big knife to replace an axe/hatchet in their kit, also I find battoning with a knife to be retarded, sure in an emergency you might need to do it, but some people seem to think it's something you should do all the time!?!

Hate to be THAT guy, but tomahawk if you buy a decent one. Not the gimmicky, tacticool one. If you are looking for a good multi use tool I recommend it. I have been using mine for 6years now and I can do anything a guy with hatchet can and more. Just as long as you take care of it. Don't ride her hard and put her up wet, sharpen it, clean it, tell it bedtime stories. It also takes up less space. Pop the top down the shaft and it makes for easier storage, plus if you for some reason break your handle a nice size sapling will do the trick.

Does that wood need splitting?

A small bow saw and hatchet combo is the best way to go.
Sawing is faster for processing loads of wood, creates less noise, and is easier on yourself, then use the hatchet to split the wood.
Saws are light and take up no extra room just being tied to the hatchet.

I've used a Junglas for several years now. It is a great blade backed by the best warranty in the business, So you don't have to worry if you fucked it up.
That said, in the winter time, you're risking breaking/chipping the blade if you're the chucklefuck prone to batoning.
Where I am at, I can get away with a machete/large blade because there is an over abundance of burnable and shelter material that can be havested by it without batoning. That said, the heat treat on a ESEE is good enough (and dat warranty) that you could baton with it

For canoe camping? I bring a GB Scandinavian, bucksaw, and the Junglas. I have everything covered

OP...me, I'd get a $40 wood handled hardware store hatchet. It's the same tier of construction as your old estwing, only with a far more comfortable handle.

Only if you want to spend many hours drastically reducing the functionality of a cheep tool. Just buy a real fucking hatchet. Estwings are NOT a quality tool. They are a $30-40 hardware store hatchet. Buy a wood handled $30-40 hardware store hatchet instead.

I use an S.A. Wetterlings Wildlife Axe, Bhaco Laplander, bow saw and Mora classic knife (not pictured). I just can't see trying to seriously process wood with a knife when I have a hatchet that you can practically shave with that works so much better. The little Laplander is okay for intricate saw work but is no comparison to a nice bow saw. The one pictured was borrowed. I plan on getting a Svensaw soon.
