In my opinion, an axe is more of a tool for around the homestead/farm. Hatchets, on the other hand, have some trail utility about them. I'm partial to an Estwing roofing hatchet because it's virtually impossible to break and doesn't weigh an awkward ton.

I agree with you on axe being useful only for homesteading, expecially considering the weight.

On the other hand i personally feel limited with one handed tools, i normally use a knife or a small saw for those.

A good middle ground would probably be a splitting axe or a carpenter's axe.

I typically camp with at least 1 general purpose fixed blade knife and my Estwing. I keep waffling on a saw. I might just bring a blade and a baggie of hardware. Sawframes are easy to build with found materials. For me, the downside of saws is that they do only 1 thing. My Estwing digs, chops, pounds, and pries. It's pretty handy.

I am reading "Woodcraft" by Nessmuk and he suggests a double edged axe, one edge filed coarse and the other fine - i am assuming he suggests this exactly for the sake of multifuncionality.

Dick Proenneke had a double edged axe too (along with all the other tools he carried), but he was homesteading after all

Survival was a forced reality that man had to endure before civilization became what we know it today. The survivalists/zombie scenario allows for one to gain purpose. Even if it isn't likely to ever happen it is something to look forward to. Plus honestly its never bad to be prepared no matter what.

Sure, you don't need an axe to pitch a modern tent or light your gas stove for your store-bought ready meal as you press the button on your electric coleman lamp, but you need an axe for pretty much every essential true outdoor task. Or a machete, depending on the environment.
