Sort of new to /out/ beginning to venture into less populated camping areas.

Thinking of getting a pistol for personal defense, along with a shotgun. Any recommendations for the pistol?

I would, but damn getting a license is a very long and tedious process.
We have to wait about 6 months to get the license after doing a DNA exam, anti doping, a psychological exam and going through a certificated gun safety course. After that, when you buy a gun, you get it 2 months later because the police runs ballistic tests on the gun.

Good thing our animals are pretty small and our niggers stick to the city. So I conform with a knife.

I carry a .38 S&W Airweight 5 shot revolver. I use rat shot rounds in it. I am more worried about a rattlesnake than a person. Although getting shot with rat shot would suck. I have never had to use it. I have seen snakes and been able to traverse around them.

Glocks are excellent handguns but I dunno if they are a particularly good choice for /out/.

In the first place, you don't mention where you'll be outdoors, as camping on Kodiak Island
will get you a different recommendation then camping in Ohio but generally, I prefer revolvers.

Very occasionally I take a leatherman wave knife. It's 3", Los Angeles county legal. Most animals are more afraid of you, especially bears which just run away. An ax is not very useful, but quite heavy.

I don't need to carry, but I am able to. I went /out/ for years armed with nothing but my pocket knife and a hiking stick. Then I realized that I was a responsible adult with a right to protect myself. Law enforcement response times are terrible, even in cities. They are much worse in the wilderness areas that I so love. I got training and a handgun which I bring with me sometimes. It weighs 19 oz and costs me nothing to bring along and when I get home I can clean it and put it back in my nightstand.

I carry a Glock 20 with 15 rounds of 180gr Doubletap. It's between that and a 329PD, the .44 is a better bet for bears but I went with the higher capacity/ease of shooting, full power 525gr in the 329 is the hardest thing to shoot I've ever experienced, and I've shot the .500 and .460 Mag short barrels

Standard advise for people looking to get into guns: talk to someone that already owns a few, go to a range and rent some, see what feels good in the hand. I like the feel of my Glock29, but everyone else I've let shoot it say it's too thick (10mm). My brother put slim grips on his CZ P-01, which is already slim as it is, and is dead accurate, but I can't shoot it straight for shit.

Mostly this. Though most /out/ trips could probably keep a semi auto clean enough with little effort.

A revolver is much more reliable as is it wont get dirt/dust/ect inside all the little moving parts. They're more accurate, though probably not an issue, and typically you can get larger calibers for the same cost. The only downside being they only hold 6 shots, but unless you plan on fighting off an army of hobos or something 2 or 3 should be more than enough.

Aside from that, check the laws of the places you'll be going to make sure you won't be violating any laws. I don't generally take a firearm with me unless I plan on shooting as I don't generally go alone. Most maintained parks are safer than most cities.

PS. there's most of /k/ comes to /out/.

You guys sound like terrified children, probably because you've never actually been outside. The world is not full of threats. You can be safe without walls, electricity, running water, and firearms in the wilderness. I can understand concealed carry in some neighborhoods at some hours. People are dangerous. But in the woods it's dead weight, and it's something unfathomable for any experienced backpacker.

I bought a .45, but after using and considering I wish I had gotten a .357 magnum.

9mm simply does not cut it for bear, and one shot from a .45 or a .357 will stop a crazed person on drugs in one hit whereas this is not the case with a 9mm.

I'll agree that "situational awareness" is critical when carrying a handgun, (even more so when unarmed)
as that handgun is useless if you don't pay attention to what's going on around you and blindly walk into
trouble but in this particular case, the bike rider clearly saw the threat early on when the robbers came
running out from the woods and he stopped well before they got to him and had plenty of time to draw
his own handgun (if he had been carrying one).

I carry a Ruger LCP to uni, which I'm not supposed to so it has to be well concealed.

I own a Kel-Tec PF-9 but I dont feel i need to bring it /out/. I just bring my rifle on long hikes/camps. Never had a problem here in Northern Ontario, or near my summer house in B.C. I have been lucky. Seen many fuckin bears/moose from a safe distance.

I don't trust it for protecting from bears for the same reasons as why I don't trust mace to protect me from criminals. I have been using diluted mace in my eye drops for a long time simply to build up a tolerance. It's great for your immune system and is practically the same thing as cayenne pepper, Which has a wide range of herbal medicinal uses.

Looking to own a first piece of hardware and live in Southern California. A friend had a Beretta 92FS, took me to the range, I loved it and the feel... There is a very low chance of being attacked by anyone/anything, but if you ARE attacked, you are your own protection, just like you are your own paramedic and firefighter. Have the tools to do those jobs.

Going on a short hike tomorrow in Appalachia region and I'm bringing my .45 Blackhawk with me on a belt with a Condor bowie on the other side of it. I keep several extra 300 grain hard-casts on my belt in addition to the six inside the wheel. Also I keep several snake-shots (handloaded) on my side on my belt as well. This is my personal choice 80% of the time, although not maybe the best for others.

The reason I choose this gun is because I am most accurate with it and can perform at greater distances than most other handguns.

After I reamed the cylinder to shoot lead bullets I cast better, I practiced more with it due to cost being lower to shoot, therefore I am most proficient with it. Around here, the biggest, meanest thing you will see is a timid black bear that you can shoo away with noise almost always. But for those other times, six 300 grain slugs well placed in speed will give me better confidence and persuasion than spraying them all over with a Glock or a Desert Eagle.

p.s. I was originally going to bring my Desert eagle tomorrow in a shoulder rig for some target work, but since it's fall, even 50AE brass is hard to find in a pile of leaves.

OP, I recommend the S&W Airlite .357. Weighs 12oz unloaded, 5 shot, and very dependable. Nothing against Glocks but I prefer wheels in the woods.

If you are actively hunting bear/cougar/wolf/methhead and you stalk up on one at a distance with your weapon at the ready, rifle is the best choice.

I go backpacking in bear country without firearms regularly because carrying around an extra 8 pounds on tough trails for 3 or 4 days for *almost* no reason fucking sucks.

When I first started camping a lot and seeing bears frequently I wouldn't go without a shotgun or a rifle. I got over it. 90% of the time, you see a black bear and it's already leaving the area. If it's not, you know it might just be a bad motherfucker and you give it a lot of space. Cache your food. Don't be boozy and messy in your camp space, and go somewhere else to shit. Learn to gauge and use the wind to avoid encounters.

As a guy that hunts and always brings guns with me when I'm car camping, I view a long gun as dead weight on most backpacking trips (unfortunately, no can into revolver here - BC Canada) and I'd be quietly pissed if a new hiking buddy brought a big gun for a long hike in the southern half of the province, because it means I'm eventually going to have to pick up his slack.

Heavy grizzly country makes more sense. There are certain places at certain times of the year outside hunting season that I take a gun. Even then though, defending yourself with a firearm is NOT a desirable scenario. Something's gone wrong. Anyone that hunts knows you can put a big fast bullet right through a relaxed deers chest cavity and it'll run for a bit. What if what's still running for a bit is a 900lb griz headed straight for you?

Pepperspray works because it's a deterrent instead of a weapon. You can employ it long before you can legally or ethically justify using a firearm on a brown bear. Big momma with her cubs is woofing at you and moving into your area? Move upwind, use bear spray. Big nasty boar is moving in on your camp to check you out? Move upwind, and use bearspray. Bear fucks off. You get the picture.

How would you deal with a situation like this, or finding a grow-op (since I live in BC lel).
Personally I'd back the fuck away and say I didn't see anything, but idno.
I've heard stories that a kid around here did find a grow-op, went home and told his buddy and they went back. At least one ended up "missing".
Also if our government unfucks our laws I'd probably carry my vz-58 SBR because dat 7.62.

Well jumping from a pressurized cabin could cause problems, but above 15,000 feet you're looking at a high risk of hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and you pass out and just fall limp. Seen video of that, lucky his buddies flipped him over and pulled his chute for him. Also, unless you have skydived in the past, you'll likely fall to your death.

For home defense a 9mm is great. But for outdoors where your only threat is a large animal you want a powerful gun.

I use a .357 revolver and it is pretty much all you need unless you will be around grizzly bears, in which case go up to a .44 magnum.

My revolver is a Rossi .357 magnum, Its was about $400 and is pretty reliable. Revolvers are great for outdoor use, They don't really require extensive care like a Semi Auto. You can leave them in a camping bag for 3 years and they will still work fine.

If you want a Semi Auto be aware that you will need to keep them clean and oiled, which will be difficult in outdoor environments. But they are also more resistant to shock. You could drop one 30 ft on to a rock and it would probably still work. But a revolver will be less likely to stand up to the shock.

So

>climing, mountain biking, off roading = .40+ Semi auto
