Tarp in the rain

I am used to tents but i would like to switch to tarps in order to save weight and space - so i will opt for a tarp system and make shelters like picrelated.

One thing that is not clear to me is: when it's raining, doesn't the terrain get humid? Doesn't rain seep under the tarp and straight below your body?

With a large tarp like a 3x3 you can put a floor in the shelter, but without a doubt in any decent storm you'll be wishing you bought a tent.

With tarp or tent or anything else you build as a shelter, always build it on a mound if there is one and always dig a trench around it to divert water away. Most parks with nice campgrounds have the places to pitch tents on compacted sand that is able to drain away water without a problem.

Like said by others, it all depends on location. You put a tarp or tent on a slope and your going to get wet if its raining. You must look for the ideal location. If you don't see one on your first stop then keep looking until you find the perfect place where you can stay out of the rain by yourself. Put the tarp there for some extra cover and sleeping purposes. Learn to set up a tarp in a variety of ways for different situations so if that rain does get in then you don't lay there miserable all night. Just change the angles and edges of the tarp. You will learn with experience. Hope this helps OP

have some kind of waterproof groundsheet anyways and keep an eye on where you pitch it.

in a storm there's no getting around it, a tent is much better, being sealed on all sides.

Two options. Best combined.

One. Hammock. Keep your back and butt off the ground, dry and comfortable.

If there are some more serious storms or rain either take a good tent or reschedule. Some would intentionally venture out during storms for the experience and thrill of it, but you seem to lack the knowledge of what to do in such situations so I would say just avoid them for now

Strategic placement of your shelter on elevated ground along with small drainage "ditches" can prevent this. Or just a piece of plastic sheeting to go on the ground underneath you. Also hammock, but even with a hammock I'd take a small piece of plastic so you have something dry to stand on when it rains.

since you have no cost requirement, consider current generation silnylon or cuben fiber tent/shelter systems.

terra nova, sixmoon designs and tarptent are three highly regarded manufactures. they will give you more protection from the elements, at about the same weight or only slightly more than a tarp+poles+bivy+bug net

Nope, I've used these in ridiculous rain. Just don't set up in low ground where it might pool or flow. I use a goretex bivvy bag outside of my sleeping bag, and a cheap ass insulating mat.

I use a tarp but i have only been through one really bad storm. I got through that completely dry by using a drop cloth and pitching my tarp with one corner to a tree and the other three staked directly to the ground making a wedge that faces the wind. Also make sure you don't have the water draining off the tarp uphill of where you sleep.

Neat trick with this kind of shelter is to use them to collect water. Tie a bit of cord to the edge and tie a little stick to the end. Shove the stick inside your water bottle and then turn it so it will get stuck under the neck of the bottle and hang it there overnight in the rain.

This is a pretty interesting trick. Simple and effective.

A tarp can be applied differently depending on the scenario at hand. Warm weather? Simple canopy. Cold weather? Make your own heat catch to maximize your fire.

The issue with wet ground seems best avoided using a hammock. To hammock users, does your sleeping bag perform better than when on the ground? I would assume so but am curious to hear first hand accounts.

To be honest, I haven't been using my hammock long enough to tell you if there's any noticeable difference in actual cold temperatures. I've only ever used it on warm nights, one time with a little rain but nothing really cold, so I haven't gotten to see if it's any better or worse in cold weather.
I can say that it's a bit more cramped in a hammock than on the ground and takes some getting used to though, at least it seemed to for me.

Not OP, but what size tarps are the best?
Just trying to make sure I don't get one that barely covers my sleeping area or one that's pointlessly large for one person.

Also if ground camping, is it better to fold it under you like pic related, or just get another tarp for a groundcloth?

Mine is probably atleast 10 feet long and maybe 16 feet wide. i dont know the exact specifications.

I made sure it was longer than my hammock so if it rained (and it did rain) the water wouldnt drip down the lines connected to the hammock.

And with tarps bigger is always better. Just make sure you have enough line for it

Step 2- Place it on the ground with the sides pointed up.
Step 3- Place rocks in each of the 4 corners.

Make sure it is protected from the rain. Your tarp must be able to completely prevent the wind from directing rain into the fitted sheet.

If you can do that then the water will have an impassable barrier on all 4 sides of you.

How heavy is it all though?
I have a 800g goretex army issue bivi I use as well as a less-used 1.5kg tent. To me, a bivi and tarp seems useless as for an extra 300g I could just have a tent and all of its benefits or for 400g less I could just use my bivi bag and be able to set up anywhere I like at any time.

i carry 2 large plastic garbage bags for if its get wet, you can lie on top of that. as a tarp i use a poncho, so i can't fold it underneath (well i could, but i like a bit of space to sit.
