I picked up a rifle from a cousin of mine relatively cheap and was wanting to know what all I could hunt with it. It's a Browning - MODEL BAR 338 WIN MAG GRADE II.

Used to hunt a lot with my father when I was younger, but I haven't been in quite a few years. I'm looking to get back into it, so any tips are appreciated.

Also, hunting game general.

Hunting season kicked off in Finland a few days back. I can't participate so requesting your favorite hunting stories.

Nice gun op, wy fag here, I have a BAR in 270 win. The 338 win mag is pretty big round, I wouldn't shoot any small whitetails with it. Its more ideal for mule deer, elk, or even a bison. Its also a bit on the heavy side but if you don't mind carrying the thing then its not a problem.

Dunno where you're at and what game is available but a .338 Win Mag is massive over-kill for deer and the ammo will be expensive

More deer are taken east of the Mississippi with .30/30 lever actions then all other cartridge / rifles combined.

Now if OP is for example hunting elk out West and will regularly need to take long range shots, then it might be justified but even then, it's
still probably more gun then he'll need and will encourage him to take bad shots simply because he's got a magnum "Hammer of God" rifle,
more then likely resulting in the animal being wounded and running off to die from infection.

I've got a buddy here in Michigan who hunts with a 7mm Rem Mag rifle simply because he thought it was cool, but I doubt he's ever taken
a shot further then 50 yards away....

The vast majority of hunters don't need a magnum rifle and couldn't use it to its full capability anyway.

While you could get away with using a single shotgun for all the above, unless you're dirt poor there is no reason not to get the right tools for the job.

I would suggest; a bolt-action or lever action rifle in a common caliber for deer hunting, a pump shotgun for rabbits, turkey and quail and a .22LR carbine for squirrels (and low-cost target shooting)

You may also want to consider an over/under shotgun for rabbits and upland birds, (also clay shooting) a dedicated turkey hunting shotgun and a bow or crossbow and a muzzle-loader for early and late season deer hunting, if you find yourself really getting into hunting.

As for other small guns, no aspiring fudd's collection can be complete without

Can you provide stats from a citeable source? That's a complex opinion that you're trying to pass off as established fact so you're going to have to break it down some.

Start with the vast majority thing- I'll settle for a simple percentage of all big game hunters in the US.

Now, about that need thing you snuck in there. That's an entirely subjective thing. I doubt you're qualified to comment on the needs of an entire grouping of diverse humans, except in the most general terms.

Now, the part about inability to use a .300 Win Mag to its full capability. First you'll have to define that capability, then you'll have to demonstrate and quantify the inability of the hunters.

Provide sources to back up your work, pls.

Yeah, it sure is fun to lug a ~9lb. rifle chambered in a round that's overkill for anything but moose up and down mountains all day. A nice, lightweight .30-06 or .270 will give you all the ballistic performance you need on elk, deer or bear (unless you're one of those chucklefucks that takes 400+ yard shots), will weigh 30% less and won't dislocate your shoulder when you fire it.

Indeed, I hate that the firearms industry still uses the term "buckshot", as it encourages newbie idiots to use this ammo for deer hunting, resulting in many wounded deer running off into the woods to die painfully from infection, after getting hit with a pellet or two by dumbass hunters wildly blasting into a herd of deer.

Note; the diameter of the 000 "buckshot" pellets is only .360", around the size of a 9mm Luger bullet while weighing much less and moving at a substantially slower velocity.

tl;dr DON'T use buckshit.

I highly recommend an ar15. It does fairly well with larger game, (deer, hogs, coyotes) and you can pick up a conversion kit for it for really cheap. If you didn't know, this makes it possible for the ar to fire another caliber, generally 22. it combines all of your hunting needs into one rifle, assuming youre not hunting buffalo or some gigantic monster like that.

Consider this- according to FBI and CDC statistics, there are more guns in the US than there are cars. And, depending on which source you want to use, there were between $1.6 and $3 billion in ammo sales in the US in 2013.

So, with all of those hundreds of millions of firearms out there being fed with billions of dollars worth of ammo, why are we not up to our ears in corpses? If guns can only be used for killing, we should be racking up a few thousand bodies per day. Where are they?

Or, could it be that about 99% of gun owners actually use their guns for activities other than killing?

the point isnt that guns have to kill people. its that guns were invented to kill people. more accurate comparisons (im including the guy who tried to say cars are made with the sole intent of killing people just because people die in car crashes) would be something like a sword. or an anti personnel mine, arrows, clubs, spears. guns are an implement of warfare. they were created to kill people, and later to kill animals, and now they are used for fun.
i dont think anybody is saying guns are BAD. its not guns that are bad, its people who misuse guns that are bad. and you cant just completely disregard the public's fear of guns (im not afraid of guns. i enjoy shooting guns myself) just because you yourself would never shoot a person in your current mindset. i think, and i have no facts to back it up, that a large portion of gun fatalities are from 1 second impulses. if you are angry, and you have a gun, and you shoot a person without thinking (weve all blurted out something we regretted in anger, its like that, but with flying pieces of lead) its going to have a big impact. its going to instantly reach out and impact that person in a negative way. you could do the same thing with a hammer yes, but you would have to walk over to the person and intentionally hit them, by that point people would be onto you (i seamlessly switched into a spree killer scenario without warning, thats my bad) but even so, that one hit with a hammer wont be as bad as a gune because a hammer was not invented to murder things. guns were brought into existence solely to end life. they were kept around solely to end life. it was only afterwards that we realized that they were also incredibly fun to shoot at non living things. you really cant argue that guns werent invented as implements of warfare. it would be like trying to say planes werent invented for flying.

I never have taken a cavalier attitude toward firearms. I do take exceptions to sweeping statements like your

There's a few other tells in there also. Your absolute conviction that IF a person has a gun they WILL use it in a fit of anger was the true giveaway. Again, lets look at the numbers. There's over 100 million gun owners in the US. I never said guns are for killing only. I live in Australia and all my family's guns are at my dad's house (where I am not currently) and locked in a safe so I can't really take a photo. We have a couple of CZ .22lrs rifles and two over/under shotguns, plus two Lee Enfields (which we never used because ammo is hard/expensive to get compared to .22lr), a No. 4 Mk I and a butchered one we think was a No. 1 Mk V but has had the magazine and sights and a few other things changed. We use our guns for hunting, shooting targets, and the Lee Enfields mostly are just cool things to own that we take out on special occasions. No, we don't only use them killing, but that's what they were designed for. Same way swords were invented for killing but some people use them as decorations, collect them etc.

As the four people backing me up earlier can attest to, guns were invented as a more efficient way of killing people. First we bashed each other with rocks, then we started slinging shit, using arrows, crossbows, then guns... to think the firearm was invented for any reason other than shotting another human being dead is stupid

I'm not saying they don't have other purposes or should be illegal. Crossbows were also invented for killing shit, they're still fun to shoot at targets and all. I don't get why you're so defensive I'm not trying to insult you and take your guns.

Disarming a society does not fix the problems of that society. How about you stop blaming objects for deeper rooted social ills? Yes, any US citizen will be the first to tell you that we don't have a perfect society. Bitching about it is our foremost hobby.

Since the gun bans in Britain and Australia, their violent crime rates haven't dropped at all. So they have some pretty deep societal problems as well. Fix the problems, not the symptoms. Taking away guns, or enacting some bullshit "common sense" control legislation like a registry only increases the societal dysfunction.
