What does hypothermia really feel like? I have heard the only part that really hurts is warming back up. Has anyone here ever had it and recovered? How do you keep a level head with your judgement impaired by the cold?

This story makes it seem like a decent way to go if it comes to that.

I had Hypothermia pretty bad a few years ago on a Canyoning trip.

Pretty much impossible to make level headed decisions. But it was my own fault it happened, so I've learnt since then. Now every canyon trip I go on I carry an extra set of clothes, and a first aid kit completely dedicated to hypothermic patients w/ waterproof matches, tinder, multiple space blankets etc

Pretty much if someone is very hypothermic, be gentle... you can actually stop their heart if you are too rough with warming them up if they are in the last stage

At first you are cold, and shiver your ass off. Give it 45 minutes and it will go away, you won't shiver anymore.

At that point you are no longer cold and you begin to feel odd - not lightheaded but more like euphoric. You don't feel the wind or the cold or the snow. The only thing you notice is the sun and whatever the single most vital goal to your survival is at that point.

Not long after that you will begin to feel sleepy. Eventually, your body while exhaust itself and you will get very tired. You will not realize it, but your body will have a primoridial urge to go to sleep. Willingly, you will lay down on the ground or some bushes and go into a painless, comfortable, deep sleep that you won't wake up from.

It's very deadly, and most won't realize it till its too late.

Keep in mind this only happens when you don't have the appropriate clothing, or haven't eaten in a while. It's easily avoidable, but hard to see.

I had it when the power cut out in winter and my blanket was a electric blanket. I woke up cold and couldn't find the edge of the bed to get out. Finally got off the bed and checked fuse box. Saw the power was out, so...I went back to bed. Granted, I loaded the bed up with everything under the sun (clothes, sheets, etc). Luckly the power came back on soon. I was sick for the next 2 weeks feeling burnt out or like when you have drunk yourself stupid. Not one of my more proud moments.

I have never been able to figure this out but it's happened to me once.

Teeth chattering
Non stop shivering and feeling of intense cold
Wore socks, put on sweaters, covered myself up, still non stop shivering
Couldn't stand it after a while, ran to the shower
Full hot steaming shower, still can't stop shivering, teeth still chattering, immensely cold
Infact, I don't even know, it was a weird feeling
Go wake up room mate after drying myself and dressing myself up, non stop shivering still
We goto the emergency department
By then I'm feeling much better but so tired, completely spent
Sit in the emergency room, doctor finally sees me after hours
Not shivering anymore but dead tired
Doctor checks everything, has no idea what would cause it.
Says probably some bug but not sure

I still don't know what happened that night with me

Fever. Did you check your temperature before heading to the hospital?

I've experienced similar type shivering that can't be stopped from high (101+) fevers.

No, I didn't.
I don't remember feeling feverish though. And hadn't been sick or anything.
And it just went away by itself in a few hours, I never took any medicine for it.
So it's just always baffled me

I've had hypothermia before. I wasn't like him at all, probably because I didn't have as much physical exertion as he did. He's probably feeling more like shit because of the exertion and not much from the actual hypothermia.

When I had hypothermia, I was perfectly calm and didn't feel a damn thing. In fact, I felt warm, which of course wasn't the fact. I just suddenly stopped shivering and was like, "oh, it's not so cold out here now, probably not a good sign". I was nearly naked, just in shorts, completely wet, and traveling through 2 feet of snow in a storm. But, I came out of it without any physical problems or losses, thankfully. Don't ask.

Stuff like that can happens from intestinal inflammation too. Which, may or may not have intestinal pain. It can be something as simple as having partial constipation where you are using the bathroom as normal, but up in your large intestine there's something stuck and other stuff can still get around. Normally, you'll have an unknown low grade fever towards the evening then it'll raise in temperature into the night. By morning it is all gone, but if the problem hasn't passed it will repeat the next night. If there's intestinal pain involved, fever reducing over the counter stuff like ibuprofen completely stops the pain and fever allowing you to heal a bit better.

I've had heat stroke and altitude sickness a couple of times. They are horrific ordeals, where you simply feel the most hungover possible, like you are literally going to die, and you sleep and worry that you won't wake up. It's awful.

Reading this thread makes hypothermia sound fucking awesome.

Now I know why he was naked. Considering he was drinking that poison, he probably skipped a few hypothermia stages lel

Sounds like an interesting way to off myself in old age.
Instead of just getting old and decrepit, take my last meal and a flask out into the Alaskan wilderness, hike somewhere I can see the spring valleys and just fall asleep

It happened to me in the summer, from fishing for two days and nights straight through in a float tube. The water wasn't even that cold at the lake, like a real nice 78F. Since I was kicking myself around with the fins that kept me warm enough to not feel cold at all in the water and drinking a lot of whiskey while catching fish.

Fortunately for me my brother was with me and he was in his canoe out of the water and dry. On the second day we stopped trolling and just dropped anchor in the middle of the bay and fished off the bottom, which is what started to slowly sap my body heat away since I wasn't kicking anywhere near as much anymore, just the occasional turn when reeling in a fish. The reason we didn't leave was that the fishing was the best we'd ever experienced in our entire lives, it was one fish after the other for two days straight and since there was no bag limit on the catfish we ended up keeping a hundred each.

It was my brother who noticed I was having issues when I was slurring my speech long after I'd been out of alcohol, me i felt just fiiiiiiiiiiine. But he was concerned enough that i listened to him anyway and we made for the shore. That was when I noticed all my strength was gone and while i was kicking to move it was waaaaay harder than it should have been and my brother tied a rope to my float tube and helped pull me in to shore. On land we discovered I couldn't walk, I didn't have the strength for it so my brother at that point figured out what was wrong with me and started a fire to warm me up and went to get my dry clothes from the car.

If he hadn't of been there I'd likely have kept fishing until I died. Not a bad way to go...but glad he was there.

By 'don't stress them', he means, try not to force them to move, like into a tent for example. Although, I have never seen anyone say you can't carry the person into a tent...

One time I was working in the North West Territories at a mine site. White out and I was in these atco trailers and had to walk over to the main camp building for dinner. I swear with the wind it must have been like -70C. I've worked in -40C and it isn't much different from -20C honestly. Anyway it took me about 60 seconds from door to door in this case. Wind was very hard, it was snowing, I was wearing a t-shirt. I made it maybe 3/4 of the way before I felt like I was blacking out. I just rushed my way to the door at that point and got there but holy shit, I come from a place with cold winters but I never felt anything like that feeling. I've been cold but not black out cold like that.
