These are what I use most of the time, sorry if the pic is small, I can't tell cause I'm on my phone. Usually there's no snow to deal with here so these get just about every job done for me.

I have Salomon boots for hiking.

I use these for wet/snowy days around town - they are a lot lighter than my Salomon boots and i got them over 50% off in a sale.

Bought a pair of New Balance 978 GT earlier this year, specifically for urban wear to supplement the New Balance 977s I've had for a few years now, which are kinda scuffed up from outdoor use. Had to buy women's size 11 D-width, as this particular model is now discontinued and there were no men's 9.5/D sizes available, though the women's models are the exact same boot.

They're reasonably priced, light weight, sturdy all leather construction, GoreTex lined, non-tacticool/superhero styled light hikers appropriate for both everyday urban and /out/door use.

so far p good, only have them for 6 months but used so far in alpine hiking as well as flatlands and easy terrain

so far very contend with price-performance, got them at a reduced price because noone digged the green-black-brown colour scheme (they are available in different colours)

I would recommend them for alpine hiking (which is mostly what I end up doing), what i really like is that they have something like a cushion that protects your outer ankle like a fender, very useful in rocky terrain

What are the best hiking boots I can get for under $200 bucks? They will be for hiking, camping, hunting, and just general wilderness boots. Preferable able to handle breddy cold temperatures

I wear a pair of these literally every day of my life. I bought them at a factory 2nd store for $99. I've had them for 3 years. Hard and constant use.

The cloth has peeled off of the insole. Otherwise, 100%, minus scuffs and general sole wear.

They are uninsulated, but unless you get them soaked, or your feet sweat profusely, they'll be comfortable in working conditions down to zero Fahrenheit, easy.

I actually think I wore them muzzleloader hunting one year. That's January in Pennsylvania, 12 hours outside.

The only downside is the far from aggressive tread. They're good for daily use, work, etc., but I only wore them hunting in January because I didn't have a second pair of boots at the time.

They are poor for hiking traction, and laughable in snow.

try them on beforehand and really nitpick the fit. If they fit alright def. use some waterproofing spray and break them in via dayhikes. They wont last forever if you use them hard but should be fine for casual trips.

Try to buy the highest low quality you can. Also, spend some $ on good socks. They will improve the wearability of cheaper boots.
Try eBay for higher end boots. Gearfags like myself often buy a pair and wear very little, then move on to something else. Got my first couple of pairs of Salomons that way.

It's going to be easy enough for a family of 4 with no real hiking history, so I was hoping these should do, especially considered I had harder trips with shoes that were taller, but with flat bottom.

It's just that we had some family infighting regarding these shoes, one of them claiming that they're "not trekking shoes, they're useless and you'll look like a fool" or something along those lines. Fun times

These for hiking. Mostly Nike innacity. I love their Lunar soles, but surprisingly my favorite shoes the last couple of years are a pair of water proof Nike SB Janoski Mid. I've even hiked with them - flat soles and all.

The narrow sole could have more grip. It's a vibram sole. but on wet stone they are still slippery.

Guess I am in the market for new boots. Got a pair of Timberlands, which are really comfy by now, but the profile on the sole is about gone, so using them in serious mountain terrain is becoming a bit suicidal...

They lasted about three years, but I did a lot less hiking than I actually wanted in those, so I am actually a bit disappointed that they wouldn't last longer.
