Hey /out/ I jus it gifted a small Venus flytrap seen in the picture and have no idea how to look after it as I've never had a plant before. Any advice on keeping it alive an any other information would be great. If it helps I live in Australia and we're just about to head into summer if climate info is important

Totally wrong.

OP use google, but I had a tiny one which I grew into a mighty beast of a plant. The main things are:

>don't let it dry out
Stand it in a saucer of water, try not to use tap water as it leaves salts when it evaporates
>don't feed it
Believe it or not, the plant is capable of catching its own bugs without you force-feeding it. The amount of bugs it manages to catch is about the amount of bugs it actually needs.
>filtered sunlight
Depending on where you live. The more intense the sun in your area, the less this plant needs.

I will not fuck them up right away, but rain or distilled water is best. Tap water often has numerous additives which will become concentrated in the pot over time.

dionaea grows in marshland, meaning it never naturally faces this issue and as such has a very low tolerance for salinity.

You can grow them in acidic soil (e.g. mostly peat moss) but the water pH still matters. Doesn't mean you can water with alkaline tap water.

I would just use distilled water and maybe a drop or two of vinegar in a cup.

OP, get a copy of The Savage Garden by Peter D'amato. The book has great info about that plant and many other carnivorous plants. It's the kind of book you will not regret ever owning.

For advanced, long life of the plant, you'll find that it doesn't matter that much. The plant is actually a bulb and for a healthy, long life requires hibernation at least once every few years.

This is achieved by digging out the bulb(s), trimming the leaves, and then storing the bulb in a cool, dry location for a couple of months. Repot in the spring and the plant will grow back very vigorously.

If the plant has flowered, it's probably worthwhile giving it the hibernation, otherwise no problem.

Growing plants in a microbially rich soil that self regulates pH based on a specific plant's root exudates is the shit.

OP you don't need to feed these much, especially if your growing media is rich in nitrogen and humic acid (compost basically).
