Sturdy shoes is a good guideline, but it's more important to wear comfortable shoes that don't give you blisters, especially for longer distances, and on rocky trails.
Clothes: doesn't matter, but longsleeve will keep the sun off your arms and legs, and a hat or sunglasses might be good.
The most important thing you can do to not embarrass yourself, though, is to bring water (1 liter minimum for these distances) and either a means to carry it or be prepared to hold it in your hands. Your friend will probably have a backpack and be willing to carry it, but don't show up expecting him to carry your water.
