H-hey at least I got a cool new hatchet
Is there any way to salvage it?

Well OP it looks like an old Estwing and in truth you might salvage it, but it would be slightly cost prohibitive to bring it back to original.

1.) Get a better photo fur us to judge.
2.) It looks like an Estwing axe, which is a fine one to use. It's been out there SO long the leather has rotted off the handle.
3.) If there's a lot of pitting in the steel, sill see what you can do.
4.) Spray it with rust convertor.
5.) Sandpaper for steel, and some thin oil (like WD40, but look around in the loobs to see what's cheaper)
6.) More sanding, until ALL the rust is fucking GONE
7.) make a new handle. If you can't into leather rings and varnish, hickey stick tape in a shitload of layers might suffice.
8.) File a new bevel, making sure not to shape it badly.
9.) Sharpen the edge on your new axe.

By its shape, it looks like some kid bought one at Home Depot, hurled it into a tree (or chopped into the side) and couldn't get it out so they counted it a loss the very first time they took it out.

Estwings last forever.
Treat it well.
Keep it sharp and oiled.

If you feel brave, contact Estwing about recommended handle replacement. You may be surprised. They may even want the axe, so try talking your way into another (on the grounds that they last forever, of course!)

Also sorry about the shitty quality. My proper camera is in the trailer outside and the batteries are dead and it's currently charging.

For the bit, spray it with WD40 and scrape any rust off with a paint scraper or whatever, hit it with a little steel wool if it's especially bad. Then soak the entire thing in oil for a day or so, motor oil is best but olive oil works too. To sharpen it you'll want a bastard mill file and a sharpening puck or medium grit diamond file.

me and my bro found an old two-man tree saw in out woods... my parents bought the land in the late 70sand it was half buried and the handles were completely rotted out (like in pic related)

also found some rusty jaw traps out there over the years

haha I did that with a brick by accident! when i was like 5 i shoved a brick in the fork between two small trees (like 4" trees) that i used as a step

fast forward like 22 years and i go into that part of the woods and the trees had seamed into one at the base and the brick was barely visible but a corner sticking out

Okay guys I successfully restored the Estwing to what looks like beautiful condition compared to before.
I took a drill powered steel wool and even steel fibers to grind all that rust off. While adding WD-40 of course. It's beautiful and still sturdy as all hell.
Estwing sure makes a hell of an hatchwt.
I'm gonna take off the rest of the leather rings and bolt on a wooden handle that I'll carve and varnish. Until then, I'll just wrap the handle with a fuck ton of tape.
Here's it so far. It looks like I made one hell of a find in the woods.

So, /out/, based on the picture... Did I do good?

I gotta say though, the rust -> no rust difference is crazy.
It's amazing what a few grinding tools and some wool fiber can do in just 2 hours of work.

Yeah but it's very dull right now and I still need to sharpen it after soaking for a good 12 - 24 hours.
Then whenever I head down to cut some trees, I'll find a good solid log and learn to carve a good handle.

That must be why they use electrolysis on all those sunken iron artifacts like cannons and such, you know, to speed up the rusting.

You use a baking soda solution and obviously DC and don't hook it up backwards. Oxygen is only attracted to one electrode which rusts. Make sure it's the sacrificial one.
