Unless you're in fairly thick forest in the middle of a storm, there's always ambient starlight filtering through the tarp, so you can see the pole. Plus, it's not like it's hard to remember where it is. One side of the tarp slopes over you and the other side is where the pole is. There is also pressure on the pole, and it's probably (depending on the pole) digging slightly into the ground, so even if you bump it, the tarp won't just come down over you.
Try it out sometime. These are strong shelters, and it's hard to fuck up with them.
