when i worked on a small freight boat, as deckhand then later as captain, i found you only need a few knots to secure items. the knots i most often used were the bowline, clove hitch, simple overhand knot, square knot, and truckers hitch or also called the power cinch knot. it is basically kind of a pulley to really cinch down a load. with those few knots the boat could be rolling, dipping the rails in the water and all the cargo on deck would stay put.
