It bothers you when people disapprove of the name "butterfly knife", and yet, you literally get worked up about the fact that "balisong" is not it's original name. While you are technically right, you have the EXACT same attitude as those who claim a butterfly knife should be called a balisong.
What I'm saying is :
1) let it go, it's not important
2) nobody cares
3) even if you're right, you don't have to try and educate everyone, it makes you sound vindicative, and thus, a bit douchey.
>It's bullshit when people are told that they'll save so much time and energy if they have a semi-functional enormous knife that takes more energy and effort to use than two separate tools that do the jobs well. It's also bullshit when people take a tool that some people in the Philippines started using as a weapon (because the whole point of Escrima is to know how to use ANYTHING as a weapon) and give it this whole mystique as if it was a great weapon. The way I see it, the same philosophy that leads someone to think that a butterfly knife is a great method of self-defense also is behind this dumb khukri fad. It's favoring image over usefulness to the point of absurdity. It stopped being a tool a long time ago. Self-defence, just like Escrima, is done through whatever you have, tool, weapon, fists, etc..kind of like Krav Maga.
The butterfly knife's advantage is that the locking mechanism is extremely simple and reliable, opening it can be done extremely quickly, and doing flipping tricks with it is fun. That's all there is to it. As a method of self defence, it's no different than a knife. It just has interesting perks.
There is no "butterfly knife fad",there is a dumb "self defence fad",which makes people want to get tacticool stuff, which they do not understand. Some of that stuff is crap, some isn't. The butterfly knife is an excellent design, and I couldn't care less if idiots buy them because of its looks, good for them actually
