Looks like most were people dying of heart attacks trying to shovel it all. One guy was crushed on accident when they were trying to move his car or something, not really the snow's fault. Only one guy seemed to die from exposure, it doesn't really say how though.

Where do you live, OP?

Buffalo and the surrounding area were hammered with 6+ feet of snow, some areas up to 8 feet.

My grandparents live in buffalo and were stuck in their homw for two days. If either one of them were to attempt to dig themselves out, they could have died from a heart attack as well. The snow was up over their door.

I'm sure most of the ones who died were older or had a weak heart. Have you ever attempted to shovel yourself out of six+ feet of snow? Three feet is a pain the ass, I can't imagine snow thats over my head.

The city would shut down with that much snow. At that fall rate, there would be a lot of deaths. Conversely, cities used to that kind of climate would be screwed with one of our standard summers.

I remember as a kid when it was -49 centigrade one winter and I walked to school like normal. The power was cut off from the school building so they sent us home immediately tho since you can't read in the dark... Above the Arctic Circle for ya.

Where I went to school they had -40 F be the cut off point for school, because it was so cold even electrically heating the enjInes of vehicles wasn't enough to keep the petrol in em from freezing.

I got a while week off school cause of that once.

Snow is usually never an issue because of the fleet of plows. I can understand it's a lot of snow, but I don't know why they worked so shittily this time. Some schools are staying closed until Dec 1.

It always amazes me how when Europe has a heat wave the body count soars into the hundreds. Even our northern states cope with summer heat better. Although I think they would be getting pretty close to crisis mode if they had a week of 110*F someplace like New York or Chicago.

A daytime temp of 105* and nighttime temps around 85* for more than a couple of days will really strain a lot of things. Power consumption skyrockets. I can kind of see what they're saying. I live in Buffalo but have a lot of family who visit Las Vegas regularly and say it isn't really that bad. But considering we have never had a temperature above 99, if we had a huge heat wave bringing 100+ degree temps, some shit would be going down.

I've lived in both temperature extremes. They each present different but similar hazards. Heat is a little more insidious, because it doesn't present as many environmental cues. The progression of hypothermia is more noticeable than hyperthermia, also.

When it's -20*F and blowing snow, people aren't inclined to spend time outside. When it's 103*F with a breeze, people will go out without precautions because lol nice day.

Another thing I've noticed is that people who are accustomed to one climate extreme are very dismissive of the hazards of the other extreme. Those are the people who are most at risk, due to lack of acclimitization among other things.

Then there's the weird stuff that comes out of left field. Documented cases of people getting hypothermia in equatorial waters and the like. I saw a coworker get a whopping bad sunburn on the Ross Ice Shelf. It was austral summer, sunny, no breeze. We peeled off a lot of our cold weather gear because all that sun was heating us up. He took his shirt off for about 30 minutes. Double whammy because UV reflects off of ice just fine.

I live in the sub-tropics ; people around here find it strange when we hear stories of people dying when it gets to , say 38celcius. "heatwave"
HA! - I mowed my lawn last weekend at 39celcius [and I'm a fat bastard].
BUT ; yeah, I bet many people from here could make bad mistakes at low temperatures : there have been cases of bordline Hypothermia here in Summer in the mountains during a cold-snap [8celcius] ; And when I was young and silly - and the girls were too - I remember sitting drunk outside nightclubs in colder regions where the Girls were wearing Boob-tubes and the Gas-company sign across the street said 4degrees.
Cold was a contributing factor in Bon Scotts death in London 1980 , drunk , cold , sleeping in his car - but grew-up in Australia ; less experience of Cold.

This is one of the reasons I drive my off roading truck in bad weather, it's got the air intake and exhaust above the cab. If those get blocked by snow, I'm fucked anyways, since that means we've got over 7 feet of snow.
