The knock offs are pretty much the same thing without the bling. The new age stuff can be freaky warm with half the bulk. I got some work jacket called Extreme something or other and its pretty extreme, looks like any other winter jacket but too warm for anything above -20C or so.

The #1 killer outdoors is hypothermia. I camp in the ADKs in winter, sometimes subzero temps and worse with the windchill. Never underestimate the cold. The weather can be unpredictable and you can't take chances when the nearest road is more than a days hike away in good conditions. Boots, mitts, hat and parka are pretty important.

Honestly unless you live in the legit arctic it so rarely gets cold enough to use these things that basically everyone is better off just wearing an extra layer on the odd cold days.

Where I live in Canada it typically hits -40 once a year, but I still gave up the huge parka for this reason.

These are great jackets. I bought one before they exploded in popularity. They're a major major fashion piece in Toronto (and other cities) these days.

It's a bit sad to see, and makes me want to tear the patch off of mine. But these guys have been making quality parkas for decades. In Canada they have been the go to brand for working people in the north for a long time, but more recently the son in the family took over the business and has really pushed to popularize these coats - and he has succeeded. He has said that he now wants to hit the Chinese market to make these fashionable there.

You could applaud the entrepreneurial spirit, but I don't.

I do love mine, and what's great is you can throw it on with a t-shirt underneath and run outside for a while and be comfy. No need to layer up -- obviously layering is best for many situations.
If you are living/working somewhere legitimately cold then fur cannot be beat. Look at the Iditarod/dog sled guys, they're all wearing fur.

I have one on the way, but I work in the NWT. It was -42 with the wind last week. They make lots of parkas and most of the Canada Goose coats you down south are not the $1000+ Snow Mantra version, unless its colder than -25 you will sweat your balls off. Plus it is heavy!

I have a less-intense Adrian parka by Quartz Nature for normal winter wear...

Depending on how warm your coat is, or how cold it is:

Baselayer (basic shirt)
Midlayer (wool sweater, cotton sweatshirt, fleece)
Midlayer (wool sweater, cotton sweatshirt, fleece)

Seriously you just stack that shit until warm or you can't move. If you have so much on that you can't move, but you're still cold, THEN you need a better parka.

Yes it does seem that way. But consider when yiu are out in just a really good coat, and you start sweating. You can't take the coatt because it's your only layer, but you will continue to sweat more and get more uncomfortable.
Once you stop any activity, your body is going to cool down with the sweat, then start to freeze. And now you have ice directly on you skin

I instead went for a Marmot 700 fill down that retails for $270 USD (I payed $99)

I'm wondering if I should return the marmot and get the wellensteyn after looking at the price of them. Id also never heard of wellensteyn. But im not sure if the wellensteyn jacket is actually warmer than the marmot. I sweat in the marmot indoors, but it's perfect outdoors as it's been in the 20 degree range all week.

any suggestions, or experiences with wellensteyn? Both jackets fit alright.

I don't know about the wellensteyn jacket you found but so far the marmot has fitted real nicely into my way of doing things. I like how it's just pure downy warmth - if it's needed it's on me, if not it's relatively compact and light in a stuff sack in my bag. This is all personal, but that wellensteyn looks great as a general wear it all the time jacket, about town, popping here and there etc, while the down marmot is more a specific /out/ type thing. I'd not want to stuff that wellensteyn into my pack while climbing a mountain, but equally I suppose i'd not want to chuck the marmot on when heading out all day as my only jacket on a rainy wet autumn day - when I'm /out/ i've always got a lightweight rain shell too ya see.

Again, all personal but that system works for me.

Sweat Jesus, for that price you can layer, and get expedition bibs that are 850+ down and protect your lower torso all at the same time. The kicker...anything south of around -10C, the relative humidity is so low, and any chance of snow is so dry, that the need for a waterproof gore-tex cocoon is pointless.

This jacket wants to tell me that it flies around in a plush helicopter all day long, showing rich yuppie tourists the fringe of the Tiger forest or something. Thing is, those jackets excel in urban areas of cold countries. Countries with proper winters have properly insulated houses, so it's pretty warm inside, and it's not uncommon to kick around in a t-shirt indoors. It's great to be able to commute from your own toasty house to a friend's toasty house without having to put on five layers only to peel them off when you arrive. Jeans and a t-shirt, slip on a Canada Goose and off you go. To hot? Open the jacket to vent, carry on. Remove jacket upon arrival, you're done. Also, since the jacket is indestructible, the annual write off is pretty small compared to most other solutions (provided you're not a fashion whore who won't be seen dead in a CG FIVE YEARS after they peaked).

The only people I see wearing Can Goose shit are recent immigrants (please leave) and city cunts. Before Can Goose "got big" these jackets were only a few hundred and were worth wearing. They probably still are, I wear Helle Hansen arctic gear now though. I work on an oil drilling rig in the high arctic. Shit gets cold, more than a few boys here are missing digits.

If you want to keep warm you need to move no matter what you wear. Use a base layer that is synthetic that spews out moisture for extended period in the cold or when doing physical activity. Like this wwwessentialapparelcom/images/detailed/1221708_large_blackmodel.jpg

Use synthetic long john's and Merino wool socks and your outer layer must not breath.

I found Columbia, some North Face and Helly hansen is not that warm. Orage, Arc'teryx(apparently) or Löle for women are what I know.
