Okay, if there's any former military on here I need an opinion from yall.

I never gave two shits about the inspection dates (because I guess it was never an issue) but now that I'm going out in the woods for a while and I'd like to have my trusty MRE's with me, I see that there's a variety of inspection dates available going from 2014 to late 2016

Do these dates matter, should I pay more for the 2016 inspection dates or just settle for the 2014/2015 dates?

I ate MREs from 2010, it's no big deal. 4 years old and it was still really tasty. Still got one over here, it's Pork sausage Patty, I think. The chilli is fucking tasty, but my GF wasn't quite as much into it. I'll take that one to the mountains,

Remember that inspection dates are not the same thing as expiration dates. MREs will usually stay good a couple years after their inspection date. Many MRE cases have a notice printed on them saying that they may last much longer than the inspection date due to how the government stores them shortly after their manufacture. 2014/2015 ID MREs should be fine unless you like the newer menus.

I'm currently going through an A case of 2011 MRE's. They're fine. If you get a bloated pack or it smells off, toss it. Also, MRE's are heavy, I strip mine down and leave all the dead weight at home.

I've heard people eating Desert Storm MREs and even WW2 German MREs.

From that I assume they might not taste good but will most likely still be at the very least borderline pallatable

If you're going to eat them immediately then don't bother with "inspection dates" since those bags of constipation won't spoil for a decade. If you're going to eat them on a regular basis and you haven't done so before- prepare to not poop for a week and then take the biggest shit of your life when you finally do.
