Very interested in getting into spelunking, all the caving clubs around where I live are very secretive and elite. Wondering if anyone has any tips for getting into these groups or starting caving in general.

A least once a year, they'll have a huge regional party open to the public to register. If you are an extrovert, this is an awesome opportunity to wander around, learn tips, and socialize without the usual elitism going on.

>starting caving in general
make sure people know where you are and when you'll be back
Bring more than one source of light
wear a helmet
look behind you often and make note of landmarks
don't break things or vandalize
clean and sterilize all of your things before going to a different cave system

The last two are why those clubs are so annoying and secretive.

I've always dreamed of finding an undiscovered cave. Not sure if there's an actual method to finding caves probably something you just happen upon but hey, maybe someday...

Go in known caves after a significant storm. Not like, immediately after, but give it some time for water levels to go back down to normal. That's when you'll have a chance at finding sections that might have recently opened. Be ready to squeeze through holes tighter than my girlfriend's vagina.

My dad was into it big time, and all his friends in there were all total lunatics. Special force, counter terrorism, hardcore survivalists and there was even a conspiracy theorist who was actually digging up entire dinosaurs skeletons during his free time. I didn't like caving a single bit (it's cold, confined, moist, etc).

Thankfully my dad also dragged my ass on trekkings and mountains.

a good place to get started is lava beds national monument in norcal pretty nice caves and it will make you love spelunking

Pretty fun and interesting.

Good headlamp and two backup hand held flashlights + batteries galore. I generally go in without a helmet for small caves. Still hurt yourself real easy.

Other then that its fun, wish I could get into a group to discover more.

Getting photos inside was hard to do. Even with a ton of lights all over the place the cave seems to swallow up the light. Posting more.

Have to crawl but not as crazy as some of the previous guys who posted. Tunnel at its smallest was only about 2 feet high.

Yeah no real caves here. Phone camera. Supposed to be another near this one and I heard some groups in the area knowing of others.

If you go to tobermory and jump on flowerpot island and don't stick to the path found lots of really cool caves there. Didnt get to fully explore because lack of lights.
