First Aid Kits!

What do you carry?
What do you think is important?
What do you think is not needed?
Tips and Warnings from People who had expieriences when they badly needed that one thing the did not bring are also appreciated.

Also hoping for some tips on my own list as well (pic related)

The only thing I ever contribute to first aid kit threads:

ANTIHISTAMINES.

Bring as much as you think you'll need. Double it. Then bring some more. Recommend chlorphenamine as it's pretty cheap but just as good as all the others.

I have the good fortune of never NEEDING anti-histamines whilst /out/, however I have had a pretty bad allergic reaction (Literally the entire outside of my body) which I caught a bus to the nearest A&E for. It's unlikely I would have been at risk of dying, given that I had it for a fair amount of time without it spreading inside my mouth at all, but it still scared me. Imagine being hours from rescue and suddenly discovering that a sting from some insect/plant will send you into anaphylactic shock?

I do, also, suffer from hayfever. Haven't worked out what kind yet, but it fucking sucks. Anti-histamines allow me to open my eyes fully all year round.

Anti-histamines can save your life
Anti-histamines can turn a terrible trip into a fantastic one

It's not even unreasonable to think you might need them.

Burnt the top of my thumb pretty badly. Needed large strip of band-aid. Brought a few tiny ones, but had to ask a dude i met on trail for a large one. Pic related, it's the large one.

I carry two Adventure Medical Kits.

An orange one that I supplemented with some extracts and pills. I keep this one in my outing bag.

A smaller red one I keep in my work bag; I also carry a plastic box with a bunch of wipes, band aids, and gloves.

Never mind my kit, I got in the habit of cutting up blister cards of antihistamine and sticking some in each of my bags, just in case I end up at a barn or some cat owner's house. First aid kit has more antihistamines (generic Benadryl and cetirizine HCl) as well as imodium, ibuprofen and Robax (I pulled a back muscle mountain biking when I was 17 and it still sometimes goes into spasm at the most inconvenient times)

Adventure Medical Kits aren't bad for pre-made ones. I've got a bigger one for camping and hiking, was looking at their tiny one at MEC for taking kayaking & on bike rides but realized I could just put some of the redundant stuff I had in one of the waterproof cellphone pouches I was buying (they come in a 3 pack).

Besides some band aids, tweezers, disinfectant wipes, sterile pads and moleskin I added some meds, half a roll of vet wrap (the blue stuff), and some athletic tape. I should probably put some folding scissors in there too so I don't have to cut the moleskin with a knife.

Vet wrap is great stuff to throw in your kit, it sticks to itself so you don't need tape and it's elastic and semi-reusable so you can use it on sprains and paddler's wrist.

Lot of things here are not needed. If this first aid kit stay in a car or in a house, it is OK. If you carry it on your back, remove:
gloves except if you are responsible for people you don't know
bepanthen
Vaseline
painkiller, stop being a bitch
magnesium
vitamins except for more than a week of "field food"
half of all your bandages

The only indispensable things are:
various size of bandages, disinfectant, compress, space blanket (one per person) and any medicament needed by your personal medical condition.

If you go in mountain, or if it is summer, sun screen is needed to live.
pincette and scissor are a big plus and worth the weight.
If you choose chemical water cleaner, take more.
It is always good to have needle and thread for small reparation.

Too much junk is a bad idea.

I don't know if you aimed that directly at me or not. I personally suffer from hayfever.

Allergies can present themselves later in life when there hasn't been a histamine reaction to certain substances in the past (e.g. someone could eat peanut butter for years and one day have an allergic reaction to it). It's also not unreasonable to think that you might be allergic to something you've never encountered before. Stung be a certain species of plant you've never been stung by before, for example.

Antihistamines also alleviate the symptoms of histamine reactions in general, like bee stings and such. Histamine reactions happen for a reason though, so you shouldn't take them for small things but if you've got persistent, wide-spread or alarming (like spreading towards your mouth) hives then antihistamines would be nice to have on-hand.

Please keep in mind, whilst I grew up around multiple medical professionals I am not a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or in any way qualified to give you 'real' medical advice. For better advice, ask your doctor.

A lot of people seem to believe that painkiller magically heal everything. The only thing it does it prevent you to get crucial information about your injuries.
If you have a medical condition that make you feel pain if you move, taking some is perfectly normal, but in this case you should ask your doc if you can do sports.

Your screencap just tell to reduce blood movement and go to the hospital. It is not always possible in a short time.

Again, while it may save a life, tourniquets should be done ONLY if an ambulance will be here in less than an hour and ONLY if pressed rags and pressure point didn't worked.
When you have done the tourniquet, look at what time it is and mark it on the injured or at least remember it and tell the medics.

Fail at it and the guy could loose his leg/arm. It happened more than once. You may think it is better than to die, but if you didn't made a tourniquet, you would have continue the pressure thing.
