Free OS 1:25k maps, courtesy of a torrent I've been seeding for more than half a decade. It only gets to 98.2% (original seeder never came back online), but it's 20GB of maps (most work but not all), usable with Memory Map. You can stick these on Android with AlpineQuest too, so you have GPS with proper maps suitable for walking, with no need for a 3G signal while you're out. Great backup to have in the bottom of your bag.

I've seeded 700GB of this since my last format 7 months ago. I want to share more. Because fuck Memory Map's and the Ordnance Survey's pricing structure that makes getting outdoors safely prohibitively expensive if you want to go to more than one area.

Private land with permission for felling trees.

Scotland and dartmoor for wild camping legally. Anywhere else for just "being quiet and choosing a remote spot" camping.

Lake District meetup

20th-21st (Sat-Sun) December.
Meet at pub in Grasmere early afternoon.
Head SW over the hills to Great Langdale (~4km)
Camp somewhere around there, couple of campsites to chose from, or wild camp?
Next morning head up Langdale Pikes and do a circular route back to Grasmere (~12km).
Warm up back at the pub.

Yes / No? Changes? Alternative locations?

I wish I could afford to come, but I don't have the cash and if I did I don't think I could justify it for a single night. We've got a Dartmoor meetup hopefully happening this month as well but this isn't as organised as the Lake District meetup yet.

I've bought a couple pairs of helly hansen ski pants on ebay lately, one brand new £45 and one used but perfect £10, impressed with both, but they're more of a full on snow type jobbie. Good if that's what you want though.

I'm sure we could find some area with enough trees, look around 310050 on this map, near the Great Langdale label. Lots of trees. I'll be bringing a tent myself anyway.

If we set off early enough, over the footpath from Grasmere, around the side of the hill, we would have plenty of time to walk that short bit of the Cumbria Way and find somewhere suitable. Maybe near the quarries, or SE towards Elter Water. Or NW towards the campsite near the 3 car parks (287057) if we can't find anywhere suitable for wild camping in time.

You got any experience with winter camping? Because I don't have shit, nor any gear specifically tailored for it.

It's below freezing here, at night time (according to my grandmother; met office says 3*C). My bag is rated to -7*C and that's combined with an underquilt made out of the fill from the same sleeping bag, so I should be fine. Worst thing that happens is I throw some more wood on the fire or build a second one on the other side of me. Haven't actually been /out/ (at least where I needed to sleep outside) though since September, really. University sucks.

As far as I've seen the "Fuck England!" stuff seems to be more an attitude of the city dwellers than the countryfolk. As long as you're good people, you should do just fine. They'll love you if you learn Welsh. Considering how small Wales is and the fact we border England, I don't know of anybody in Wales who has thought of an Englishman coming over here to works as stealing Welsh jobs.

Can't help you with the job scene though, I'm from the south.

Thanks, I visit Wales a fair bit, basically all my holiday is there. I normally mountain bike there so usually stay in campsites or small villages and have always found the locals to be very friendly.
It seems like it's the English that seem to think the Welsh hate us? I can understand the hostility towards the rich English going to Wales and buying property to use one a year as a holiday home as its very rural where I live one of the local villages here is 90% holiday homes for the rich and it totally kills the community, in the winter there is no one in these villages.

I think that's more hostility towards rich folk than the English. The fact that they're English is just a convenient additional insult. Like calling someone fat when the reason you hate them is entirely unrelated.

People from Swansea, Cardiff and Newport will go on about hating the English, as will a lot of people from the valleys because of Thatcher closing the mines.

I've not heard of a Rocketpak until now, but looking at google it looks like a newer version of a pack my friend has but I don't know for sure. I'm not a huge fan of Snugpak, to be honest. They feel like the Gerber of sleeping bags to me and whilst they often do the job, they're not my taste.

I've gotten a bigger pack now for colder weather. I would have sold my smaller one, but it's £80 new and has all sorts of shit on it (Including cow shit stains on the hip belt) so I'm not sure it's worth selling.

Yeah you're right, I always fancied a Rocketpak but looking at recent review it seems they've really gone down in terms of quality, but I've stumbled across the Kelty Redwing, which I really can't seem to find a bad review of at the minute so it's looking like splashing out on one of them.

Used to have a large ALICE pack which I'm now selling (if anyone's interested!?!), it was absolutely massive, but I've got a little sick of the "oldness" of it if you know what I mean, it did the job fine but the suspension system and organization was lacking somewhat. Bombproof thing though.

I've used milsurp and similar backpacks; my first backpack ever was from Mil-Tec. I'm not a fan. Sticking with Osprey now as they are a brand I know and love. I have seen the Kelty packs and they look pretty cool; certainly something I'd consider.

Bit of a tip here:
I'm fairly familiar with the area, there's a really good wild camping spot at Angle Tarn (see map attached). Not too far away from Stickle Tarn once you've summited the Langdales, and is a good base point for further walks or a return walk back to where you started.

Trees aren't a necessity, I can just as easy set up on the ground so long as it's not too windy or rainy and if that's the case I'll just crawl into a bivvi.

I have a bit of experience but haven't been out in over a year. I should have enough gear to keep me cosy in all but the worst of UK weather.

I'll go through my stuff today and make sure I have everything I need.

It's pretty sheltered from the wind if you pitch your tent in the right place, as for trees, I honestly can't remember, it was pretty dark when I got there and dark when I left so. The coldest it got to when I was there was probably around single digits and it wasn't too bad. I don't think I'd hammock up though, would have to be a tent or bivvy!

Basically winter camping just means more layers, more care in terms of not leaving shit out or getting wet, and eating/drinking more. Unless you're going technical (i.e. crampons, ice axes, ropes), it's really not too bad.

A few years back when it was the really bad winter I was walking through -10 wind, wind chill was put to about -20 or lower IIRC, fair enough you won't have wind chill inside a tent, but still, it can get pretty rough if you're not prepared.

I think -10*C is rare enough that you'll be fine with a -9*C bag. There are other way to account for it though. Take pyjamas and wear dry socks/gloves to bed and maybe a balaclava. Build the fire up a bit higher. Take a hot water bottle with you (I love this; boil water the night before, sleeping with it to keep you warm and then drink it the next day).

Just realised that it'll be the night before the solstice. Don't forget your druid robes and pan pipe. Maybe we should start earlier though; mid morning, luchtime? Seeing as sunset will be before 4pm. I've never had to find somewhere to camp in the dark and it doesn't sound particularly fun.

Ai, I'm just a bit suspicious about temp ratings after a few real chilly nights in a -5 bag at above zero temperatures... That said, everyone is different. With cheap bags you can kinda just go by the weight, 2.2kg should be pretty warm, I just can't see it being -9 warm. But yeah, some extra clothes and stuff and you'll be alright. Unless there's some freak cold snap the worst case is you'll be cold and have a shit sleep.

Checked it out too, no chapel but a shedload of barrows, an old tin mine and a few ancient settlements, nothing surprising for Dartmoor. Interesting that one of them is called 'heap of sinners', but I'm sure it's just some old medieval bullshit.

Checked out some historical imagery on Digimaps (free access through research dept.), earliest for the immediate area is 1880, shows the exact same as current OS maps.

Interesting stuff though, might head up later in the week and have a snoop about. If I find a chapel I'll report back!

Checked again, it is present on current OS maps and even the 1880 map, I was just being too blind/stupid to notice it first time. Check my original post, it's between the first 'a' and 'l' of 'West Walla Brook'.

According to Digimap, the EXACT location is centred on SX 66585 66505, but that's fucking close enough. My apologies, ye whom first posted about this mystery.

Don't believe any shit of course, but now my interest is piqued. I'm sure it's just a random old stone shed or something, but I will be reporting back in a week or two when I've had the chance to get up there and check it out. Make sure you bring proper, effective warm gear if heading out. Try not to go for any ultra modern/uber cool super-tex TS 4000 hypergear (or whatever it may be called!) that hasn't been tried before (or if you do make sure to bring a backup, like a normal fleece jumper, in case the fancy stuff doesn't do what it says on the tin).

This is bullshit though. A tarp + bivvi or hammock might weigh 2-3lbs less than a tent which means 2-3lbs more fill weight in your sleeping bag without adding any weight.

If you intent to wild camp somewhere you haven't been before you might not even be able to rig a tent. You can use a bivvi anywhere.

Even if you are planning to hike campsite to campsite, shit can go wrong or conditions can get hairy and you have to find somewhere more immediate to camp. Last time I went hiking with tents someone got bad sores and progress was going so slow we weren't going to make the campsite so we had to camp on the trail. It took about 3 hours to find a suitable place to set up and even then it was on a slope. I woke up in a ball in the corner of the tent with the dude i was sharing with.

I ain't saying bivvi's are better for winter camping, but "always go for a tent" is nonsense.

The "5P rule" should really make it that you know what the area you'll be camping in looks like, or at least the lie of the terrain. Fit is everything though.

Things to look for depend on what kind of boot you like. I prefer leather so, well, that's what I go for. Simple and well put together is usually best.

If you get leather, get some boot wax too.

Some have a goretex liner, usually the better ones. Some people don't like this (sweaty footed apes) but most prefer them that way[citation needed].

Cheaper brands exist and often are decent enough as I hear, but I tend to go for the more expensive ones and they last well. Stuff like karimor from sports direct are really cheap and do not last. They are however really cheap, so might be a good first boot, so you get an idea of what you do and do not like enabling a more educated purchase when you decide to spend more.

If you want to ever wear crampons or do winter walking stuff, stiff soles are required, but are also handy when climbing rocks in the summer. I like stiff boots. Nice purchase on little ledges etc.

I was delayed in traffic and didn't get there with anywhere near enough time to make the overnight location, so I kinda turned it into a dayhike and scrapped the overnight bit. The other guys who went did the same but stayed overnight and returned back the next day (they had to go back over the other side of the valley to get back to their cars).

Lesson learned: Lancaster has shitty traffic, leave more time next time.

Once we got up to the top of the hill from Grasmere, we realised we were walking so slow with all the layers on and wind blowing that we weren't going to make it by a long shot. So we picked our way down this hill into Great Langdale valley, real slow going, and eventually met you on the road for all of 2 minutes. Pitched up at a camp site just before dark at about 3:30pm. It had all the facilities: Drying room, showers, those dog kennels people sleep in, hot tea and mince pies. We were done setting up camp and eating our tea by 4pm so we went to the pub for a few hours. Then in the morning we just walked along the Cumbria Way back to Chapel. We got a lift up from Lancaster, so just called and had the pickup time and location moved. We walked a grand total of 4km on the second day.

Not exactly a rough outdoors trip with a chance of dying... except drowning in the rain in the morning. I'm just glad to have gotten out for the first time since summer regardless of the shitty weather.

Before I got a fancy-ass down bag I did all my first winter camping trips sleeping in both a a 3 season bag and a summer bag... It's heavier than a proper decent winter bag but it worked. 2 sleeping mats is good idea, that's how I do it in winter.

Mylar blanket I'd avoid (though by all means take it along just in case) as being non breathable it might end up with condensation wetting you or your bag.

How many persons? 2 is usual but it's worth asking.

To be honest I'm not that hot on the £150 range though so probably won't be much help. It's below the point where they get seriously light and well made, but I imagine you should get a good solid quality tent for that money.

it's a little big when packed down to be really ideal for backpacking, though still not unreasonable, goes in a 45lr pack with enough space for a smaller sleeping bag, food, waterbottle, jacket, just kind of tight.

if you're coming up to the highlands or anywhere in scotland, maybe elsewhere in the UK too, i dont know, dont get anything that wont keep midges out or it'll be hell.

From what I've read lately while looking into it because of this jacket I've just bought: Generally speaking the consensus seems to be that event breathes better than gore, but requires more frequent washing to keep it performing as it should. Also because of the slightly lesser breathability, gore is thought to be a little warm (not that that's the point of a shell). Most places that aren't trying to sell you anything seem to rate them pretty much even, suggesting if you have a choice go event if more active, and gore if less but either way you'll be fine and both are decent. This is all internet hearsay though so take it for what it is.

If you're going up to £250 ish then brands like force 10, lightwave, and to a lesser extent terra nova start to open up - anything by those 3 in particular will be very decent stuff. Other quality makes do exist but god dam it's early and I can't think.

American brand tents can offer pretty good weight but many of them for some reason are made (surprisingly enough) in what I like to call the american style. Basically not meant for 10 hours straight sideways rain in a gale on a moor - High cut fly and sometimes rather iffy pole layouts that maximise space at the expense of strength. Great in the right conditions, but I prefer something a little more /uk/ oriented like the brands mentioned above.

It's been a little while since I went tent shopping (and spent a fuck ton so i hopefully never have to do it again) so can't point you to particular models, you'll just have to weigh up price/weight/space/strength.

Their attitude was good, they complimented us on having the correct survival gear and a strobe light, the weather report we had didn't prepare us, day before was perfect weather, Our GPS was giving us stuff that we knew was wrong, managed to get a grid reference out via whatsapp using my map (no steady signal but had good internet signal wat) we camped behind a rock near the trail, knowing we wouldn't make it back to base in the blizzard conditions with little light left and completely sodden, they got to us and we had to hike 1km to the helicopter.

Personally, I really like the islands. Arran and Skye in particular. Skye's nicer but Arran is easily (and cheaply) accessible from Glasgow via train and ferry, just depends the time you have I suppose.

Loch Lomond is nice but quite Touristy in bits and is polluted with families in the school summer holidays (end of June through tonmid August).

If you have a week, I'd say the West Highland Way is a pretty great way to see a lot of the best bits of our country, taking you through the highlands past loch and glen but you'll need good insect repellant

Are fully waterproof boots even a thing? Or do they all let water in eventually? My £50 leather Trespass boots (with some knock off of goretex on the label) lasted for 3 single day walks before they started letting water in through the material on the tongue. 9 months later and my feet get wet in heavy rain. Waterproofing rub on treatment hasn't helped at all. I'm planning to try my first long distance walk this year, so wet feet is no fucking good.

I've got a pair of Meindl GTX Vakuum, which I wax regularly. Never had water get inside, and sweat gets out fairly reasonably.
They were pretty expensive back then, but if you treat them well, you only have to get the sole replaces from time to time, which is fairly cheap (50€-70€ here). I'm on my 3rd sole now after 6 years and I walk a LOT.
Though that specific model might be a bit too rigid for what you plan to do. It's considered a "B" by Meindl, but I use it for environment that would be considered "C" just as well. The boot's a bit too hard for forest roads though.

Yeah, that's the one I use.
Clean them regularly (after every hike if you don't go out often or at the end of each week if you do), and get the soles replaced in time and they will last you a long time. In addition, every few months (provided you use them a lot) or before bigger tours, clean them thoroughly, wax them just as thoroughly, with special attention to the seams.

Anyone use microfiber towels? If they're anything like the ones I have in the kitchen, I imagine they'd be absolutely horrible to use for toweling yourself dry. And I bet they'd get full of dirt and grass the second you let it get near the floor.

Are they different to the ones I'm thinking of? They're expensive but one thing I hate carrying is a heavy towel, especially because it's basically single use on a camping trip.

Honestly they're not that great. I find they don't retain moisture very well so when drying off it's more like wiping the water to different parts of your body after a while. Then again, you only need to get vaguely dry and then let the breeze do the rest of the work.

I got the XXL one that is the size of a regular towel and love it. Lasted me years and I use it as my gym towel as it folds down so small. Mine's been to like 15 countries. Dunno what the other people mean about it just moving water around? This one sucks like your mother. Only downside is that they can take a while to dry, but then I guess all towels do.

tldr 8/10 would towel with again

I read up on them actually and apparently there are two different things labelled as microfiber; one is actual microfiber and the other is softfiber which is apparently the sucky one. Maybe I was just a pleb and bought the softfiber one.
