Noob here, please answer a couple of questions:
I am looking to buy a walkie talkie to use for hunting, fun etc. I was wondering if this cheapo from ebay would do it? Pic related: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Baofeng-GT-3-MarkII-V-UHF-136-174-4-00-520MHz-Ham-Two-way-Radio-Walkie-Talkie-/190986730927?pt=2_Way_Radios_FRS&hash=item2c77b23daf

Don't have any experience with this particular model but most Baofengs are pretty similar. There's a program called CHIRP that you can download if you buy a programming cable (pretty cheap) that allows you to enter frequencies really easily. Practical uses? whatever you were planning on doing with a two-way anyway

The seller does not seem to answer any questions, the main thing I need for my radio is a search function were it is standby so that when someone speaks on whatever frequency the radio switches to that frequency

Yeah, walkie talkies fall into what is called (in the US) FRS (Family Radio Service) which requires no license to use. The next section of VHF/UHF (Very High Frequency/Ultra) is whats considered GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) which usually requires a licence at higher broadcasting range/power (1 watt/5 watt). Do some research on Norway's radio laws first.

Baofeng radios scan VERY slow compared to good radios, maybe 1-2 frequencies per second. A good radio will do 5+. It's fine if you have 20 or so channels to loop through, but don't expect to scan the whole band or anything.

You can listen, but not transmit.
Get an amateur radio license if you can. You will be able to use a lot more bandwidth in the 70cm band.

I'm somewhat interested in getting into radios. Handheld, portable, but with a huge ass reach so I can actually use it to contact people.

Is that feasible?

For emergency awareness, travel (2cars, sailing-though then you get a radio via rental company).

I'm in Poland and I know I'd need a licence.. that is literally all I know, no more no less.

Fuckign hell that's expensive... I've been googling and in the UK it's only £15 a year. I also came across a bunch of people saying HAM's generally will report and do whatever they can to catch anyone operating unlicensed - fuck being on the same wavelengths as that kind of people. Not for me.

I'm looking into CB instead, that's unlicensed in the UK. Not sure it's worth the price difference compared to my cheap walkie talkies though.

Anything will transmit 15-20 miles if you're talking about two guys standing on hills with line of sight.

The question is, what kind of terrain do you want that kinda distance in? In most cases, it is not possible. 5 miles is realistic with a 5w handheld on simplex. Anything more requires big antennas and 50w transceivers, or the use of repeaters.

Little bit of both. Most of the time it's when I'm communicating between others in my group. If I'm taking up anchor and something happens, I can radio up to the guy in the lead so our crew doesn't spread out too far and lose each other.
Nice to have in the truck too when there's more than one rig together - most places I travel don't have good phone coverage, and radios work exceptionally well. Especially a bigger vehicle-mounted radio, vs. a handheld. Handhelds are a lot more convenient to hand out to others that may not have them though.

Also nice when I'm driving for hours - hop on a repeater and bullshit with someone for a while. It's like a voice version of IRC.

Also the emergency communication aspect - having worked with a few departments, I've got most of the area's fire/SAR/dispatch freqs in my radio.

I do find myself without cell coverage at times and the radio in my car will send out when that's not possible. It's just nice to have, and I prefer it over Chicagos bullshit FM stations. Ham here. I purchased a 5/8 wave antenna for my Baofeng. Much better over the rubber duck antenna they come with. Actually, unless your living somewhere with a repeater, the rubber duck is useless for any distance.

When home I use a 1/4 wave ground plane antenna I built. Using this I can hit repeaters up to about 50 miles away. This antenna would be portable also.

Then... The almighty FCC does say it it not legal to use this radio as a marine radio. I'm not exactly sure what it is legal for beyond ham a nd buisness. Maybe GMRS? But if you need to talk the chance of anyone saying anything or giving you shit about it is nil. But it could happen.

scanning with the cheap radios is a little hard, because there is no dial to change the freq. just a button and then the scan function is very slow although...a workaround is that the common mode of voice is FM and it's roughly 12khz in bandwidth sometimes wider but it seems like 12khz is going to be mainstream soon. so you can set the "step" at 10khz and it'll stop when it catches the edge of the signal. Then you can tune it in. If you are a rich dudette or dude then spring for something better, but this will still work.

I have a Baofeng UV-5R and a Baofeng 666S. I programed them both to run Between 462.5625 and 467.7125 channel which are normal walkie talkie channels. I also have the weather channels programed in on the UV-5R and a local repeater. But for Hunting if you have it programmed on the walkie channels you should get a hell of a range over the normal walkie radios.

A friend and his dad are both into radio stuff, and their club goes on various rally type things and days out that involve (to cut a long story short) going out and finding a bunch of transmitters in our local-ish area. Actually sounds like fun really.

Having called them a petty bunch just now, those two are actually pretty cool. They've both mentioned people will grass ya up on there if no license though.

So it goes that if someone keeps using the bandwidth of the repeater for bullshit like fart noises and mockery and general shit to just piss people off for that purpose. Then it's warranted. I've heard many hams give lectures and yell at people for swearing or other illegal things but not report it. Most things slide here, arnt too many that go by the full book. Just if you are a blatent dickhole then you will probably get hunted down and reported.

YES, I even have that model and it works, but it's not a very intuitive brand but it is cheap. For a starter radio you cant beat it it, except for the tri-power which i mentioned previously.

You can listen to the police, both fag police too! The blue/black and white and the 80s shit trash sting police. You can listen to the weather forecasts, businesses, Rail, Marine. FM Radio.

Just no AM, SSB. There are plenty of uses for this radio.

I would tell you there are much better radios, and if you live in a wet climate get one that is submersible if you can afford it. But also these will cost to about 250-300 dollars and maybe 30-40 and getting shorted in the rain is worth it.

It may say water resistant, but the way it's made it looks to me like you are whats to protect it lol.

like a lot of my electronics are water resistant while i keep them in my home.

Don't know of any that fit 1DIN.
If you've got a 3D printer and some CAD skillz, you could probably with relative ease build a dash adapter, like for a car stereo, that'd fit the panel's size.

Cobra makes a CB that fits in a DIN slot, but if I have an Extra Class license, I want to use those privileges.

You won't see that very often.

Most 100w HF rigs are remote head mounts. They heat up like crazy in the open air, so the manufacturer really doesn't want people cramming them in a dash.

I'm going to put an Alinco DX70TH in my Jeep.

I do care about front mounted or rig mounted mics and speakers, buttons mounted on the face not the sides of the control head, and 180mm x 50mm dimensions.

You're from the UK right? From what I've heard they're strict there, same as in Germany and Holland. The government doesn't sit on it's ass when it comes to radio laws and illegal frequencies.

Using more powerful equipment on the PMR frequencies isn't that detectable, but using other frequencies gets you in a mess in no time over there.

The problem isn't listening, it's broadcasting and communicating. Let's say you (or your buddies) want to rickroll or otherwise micspam the local police radio. That's a problem because it directly effects the ability for EMS to function efficiently. That, and as pertains to commercial broadcasting, back before the internet the FCC was pretty tight on making sure that you couldn't broadcast porn/lewd/propaganda things, lest some kid hears it. Radio broadcasts can very easily be identified and triangulated - basically every expensive radio you see can be hooked up to a computer and log all the input it receives. Operators can then go back and figure out the distance your broadcast is to their antenna, and if three of them are able to do it then they can pinpoint your exact location, and then send the police to fine you and give you a court date where the FCC will fine you $5,000 per violation. Licenses are a means of keeping the airwaves regulated, especially considering that each operator is given their own unique band to use.

This all being said, in an emergency even here in the US it's generally accepted that distress calls over any bands are acceptable, assuming no other form of communication is possible. In the event of a blackout, radio operators would be able to contact local police over their radios legally - assuming they signed on and signed off.

I'm guessing they wouldnt go through much effort to search an entire building for a radio.

I've just always been curious how they find people to fine them. I dont plan on transmitting until I get all of the requirements, just interested in how they would do this.

From there I'm assuming you have to gather evidence and send a report to the fcc.

i can attest to this.

I have a baofeng UV-5R as my first HAM radio(got my liscense last year) and its actually a really good starter radio. With a j-pole antenna, i got about 40 miles from a lookout near my house to my brother with another UV-5R in the catskills here in NY.

One thing to note about radios, its all about the antenna. not to say that radio isnt important, just that the antenna will make or break your experience.

It looks like you would need the antenna tuned to 475.5 to get use around the whole band with less efficiency around the edges of the band.

Depends what you mean by "secure".

You can't just assume that because no one is using it, no one is listening. In fact, there are countless people monitoring the entire spectrum, so there's no hiding.

If you really want something secure, you need encryption. But then there's another problem, it's generally illegal to encrypt radio communications, though it depends on the band, as the ones not requiring a licence can allow encryption in some countries.

It depends on why you want it to be secure though.
