Would a fiberglass-insulated one story 512 square foot building in deep woods surrounded by trees be decently cool in the summer? Or should I invest in some kind of ac? In southern Ohio, we can have pretty hot summers. I'm putting a woodstove in for heat in the winter but I'm wondering how it will be in the summer. Thoughts?

Who cares, I'm actually curious what others do. My family has a hunting blind (or rather a very small cabin, people in my family disagree on what it is) in Michigan, the way we've kept it warm is a very old cast iron wood stove my Grandfather had brought up a decade ago. Similar to pic related, but much more corroded. We've cleaned it out a few times, and taken care of it, but in a few years we may have to replace it. It might have been poorly made, or maybe we've abused it for too long, starting to rust. But it still works like a champ, and it warms the place up real well, almost too well. So what do others use? I like wood stoves, they have a charm to them.

Have you tried rubbing it down with oil, cleaning the rust, then re-rubbing it?
Not motor oil btw, vegetable oil.
Cast iron needs dat oil.

Apologies if you have been, a lot of people I know think soap is correct when cleaning cast iron.

We have, you're absolutely right about that. We really ought to oil it more more though, the moisture has been hurting it. Sometimes we can't get out there for a year or too, hence poor maintenance. It's our own fault really. Thinking I'm going to cover it in a bit of plastic sheeting next time I head up there, when I leave.

I'd avoid AC, because powering them is a bitch. I'd avoid swamp coolers because Ohio tends to be to humid in the summer to be much use.

I'd look into earth tube cooling. You run a giant loop of tube through the earth, ten or more feet down. You have an inlet and an exit, with a fan on either end.

In the winter it pulls warmer air from the earth, potentially raising temperatures above freezing year round without any heating. Dropping temperature by ten to twenty degrees in summer.

Kind of related, does anyone have any suggestions for insulation that won't get chewed up by mice? I have a small cabin and the insulation we just ripped out of it had been completely destroyed by mice and filled with shit. Is there some kind of foam board insulation I could use or something?

They make propane power refrigerators so it stands to reason that the same principle could be applied to an air conditioner.

I think your best bet is natural cooling methods like close in vegetation, south facing windows, long eaves overhangs, and light colored exterior surfaces.

If you going to use an AC unit just get a small diesel generator and an energy star rated air conditioner. Powering an AC unit with solar is going to cost a hell of a lot more than what you'd save on gas, if you're stuck on solar just get some small panels, a cheap inverter and a fan or two and run them direct. Not sure why everyone is trying to reinvent the goddamn wheel here.

Only if you button it up tight at dawn and keep it that way all day. Even then it'll be warm by afternoon.
What you should be looking for is thermal mass that can moderate temperature such as water, concrete, or stone.

My buddy has a large finished pole barn (hotrodder gear head) and it gets no shade, but it's throughly insulated and remains surprisingly cool even in the middle of summer (as long as the garage door remains closed).
