What's up /out/, I'm pretty new to this all. I have some friends that have wanted me to go camping with them for some time and I'm pretty interested in it. A friend said I'm going to need a few basic things: a knife, a bag, a sleeping bag, and a canteen. Is he correct? What else may I need? Can you point me towards some good things? Thanks for your help!

That about it. Depending on what you're doing you might want a small first aid kid and some navigation stuff but you can get by with very little.

Before any other fag interjects, no. You're going for your first time. Get something cheap.

A knife that's good and cheep is Mora (though you have to wait for shipping), as it's typically less than $15, and will last you quite a while. For a bag, just bring something that won't break and has two or more straps.

Not in particular. I used a laptop bag for years until it just fell apart for day hikes and one night trips. Military surplus stuff is nice and cheap. For a knife just about anything will work, old butcher knifes or just a pocket knife. Don't spend over $20 on a first time knife and don't buy BG shit. Again, surplus is a great way to go.

one other thing to add is a sleeping pad. it makes your night so much more comfortable, and is essential if the temperature is going to be cold while you're out. cheap ones can be picked up from places like wal mart or any sporting goods store.

are you car camping (parking your vehicle in the site) or hiking in/backpacking, carrying everything in a pack for a few miles from the car to your campsite?

Make sure you will have access to:

Divide your gear into systems for easier organisation.
Take into consideration what you'll be doing, in what terrain and what climate/weather you anticipate.

A few examples.
>Clothes
Jacket, pants, underwear, socks, boots, hat, gloves, insulation layer.
>Cooking
Stove, pots and canisters. Cutlery, cup. Something to carry water in.
>Shelter
Tent/tarp, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow.
>Tools etc.
Knife, axe, saw, GPS/compass, map, fire starting kit. First aid kit, hygiene kit (toilet paper, soap, toothbrush).

Things good to have: Cordage, duct tape and plastic bags.
If you use boots it's nice to slip on some light weight running shoes or sandals.

If you're going invest in something your priorities should be good boots/shoes and backpack.

What you need to bring depends on what you guys are going to be doing. If you're carrying stuff into the woods to a camp site you want to pack lighter than you would car/party camping.

There are lots of basic camping checklists on the web but one of the best parts of camping with a group besides the friendships and rainbows is that you can split some equipment between the lot of you.
Ask your friends for advice on your packing list after you have one.
Ask if you are being provided with whatever you need but don't have before you simply assume they are going to do so.
Remember that only you can know what you're going to need to make it an enjoyable experience and you probably won't know what that stuff is for you personally unless you spend time outdoors, don't expect milk and honey but enjoy yourself. It's always an opportunity to learn.

Also, bring some cards or it's going to be hard to decide who sucks whose dick.

All of us, I think, on /out could easily provide gear for two or more people - we don't do it coz we hoard gear and nobody asks us to share it. Besides the obvious fact that we paid, sometimes overpaid, for it;)

Knife is used as a tool. For a first trip you may want to bring cutlery to eat rather than tools.
