So, after many years of putting up with lesser copies... I finally acquired a genuine Nalgene bottle.

The only reason I have one, is that it cost me £2, and a £10 gift card I won in a geocache comp. /out/ are these things honestly worth the money they go for? the only difference I can see is the plastic it's made from is slightly thicker( and heavier) than the cheaper copies out there.

Also general Nalgene bottle thread, all tips/hacks welcome

You can get good bpa free bottles for half of what you paid for that. I got an awesome 800ml stainless bottle from the sale section on onegreenbottle for £3 just a few weeks ago.

Hydration bladders? Sure. Flexi-bottles folded up in the bottom of the pack for extra water from streams and such? Absolutely.

But the solid water bottle? If it's not something you can boil water in, you're doing it wrong.

I may move to flexible bottles that can be folded because they are lighter and more versatile. But you sacrifice durability.

I tried to use a friends half-full Nalgene to start a bearbag line. (PCT method you nub) and the bottle fell 20 ft and cracked into pieces. Just be careful out there.

Metal is such shit for water bottles. Its heavy, it dents, and insulates VERY poorly. Even the double wall ones are too fragile to be used as anything other than a thermos.

Nalgenes are great because they come in so many different shapes and sizes, plus you can measure stuff with them which works great for electrolyte drinks.

The ONLY problem nalgenes have are the "soft" ones being a little porous, so they tend to smell and accumulate bacteria if you arent being hygienic with it, and are pretty much a "no-no" when it comes to drink mixes or coffee

good advice.

it's a fucking water bottle though. name brand is secondary to whether it leaches bullshit into the water it stores or not. i've had a number of these from various manufacturers and the only reason i've gone through more than a few is rotating them out to keep their age down. carry water in it and drink it, why you needed to make some brandwhore materialistic faggot thread over this is a mystery to me.

I have a few of em. Clean up quick, big opening is convenient for mixing/filters, measurements for chlorine tabs/crystals, droppable without denting. The only downside is you can't heat on a stove. But that's what a fucking pot is for.

Nope. It has a two stage opening thing, so you can sip it through the plastic spout thing, or you can take the plastic bit completely off so it's all stainless steel.

I'm partial to Hydro flask insulated stainless steel bottles, they weigh 2x as much as >>432142 but that weight is nominal considering how awesomely insulated these are and durable. I'm honestly not going inna woods for survival so I prefer some cold water or iced tea, hot tea, coffee, hot soup or whatever if I'm just /out/ for the day. fuck some nasty luke warm stale water.

You can boil water in that if you had to, it would just ruin the outer coating, they are all stainless other than the cap and they sell an uncoated one too, I just like the grip and the orange makes it easy to find if I don't pay attention when I set it down.

If you hit an aluminium or stainless steel watercontainer hard enough to create major dents the nalgene would probably break. And a broken hard plastic container would have cracks up to the bottom while a seriously dent or even bent metal container will still function as a cup.

If you can only have one bottle and you need to survive in the woods, go with Stanley or similar single wall thick gauged stainless steel. If you want light weight plastics that are durable but may leach chemicals go with the naglene ones at last they are bpa free, not that we know about the other chemicals in them. If you want some nice insulated bottles to keep stuff cold or hot for the day go with hydro flask.

Choose what you want for what you do.

I bought a BPA free nalgene

After 2-4 weeks I had black spots in my bottle... Bacteria or Mould. Not sure.

I throw the bottle away. I use now a stainless steel bottle. You can boil up water with them.

i wouldn't use one of those hard nalgene bottles like in OP pics. they use 3, 6, or 7 plastic (i forget which) which are the types that can still leech despite being BPA free. the white translucent ones are UVPE 2 plastic which is thought to be safer, for now. i might go for SS though despite the weight.

I like to keep a quart of water in my BOB (and a mini sawyer). I boil the water first, then add it to my stainless steel thermos with five drops of bleach. That's how I keep mold out of my bottle and water at hand in an emergency (and extra weight in my bag, hurr durr).

This is true, but...and here's an important but... mold growing on plastic can't really be removed. It sinks into the plastic and you might as well toss the thing. The same is not true for metal.

Pro tip if not mentioned already:

Try not to let any liquids sit in there for more than a day unless necessary. For instance any soft drink smell is difficult to get rid of after a week even after cleaning with bleach or vinegar in my experience. Even the water will go bad if you let it come into contact with your saliva.
