Boulder fag here. Yes I understand the stigma and agree that most boulder people are fucking garbage. Unfortunately it's the easiest place to get a job in the outdoor industry which means free gear and a lot of great travel.

I'm not the fuck off we're full guy. Honestly your best bet is to save up, go as entry level as possible (no matter what qualifications you have) and then rise quickly. I started in Customer Service (college degree, few years as a bicycle shop manager, outdoor experience) and used my skills to get promoted within a few months. The pay is meh but the perks are fucking great.

Keep a lookout on outdoor industry jobs. A few places are great for a foot in the door to the industry as a whole. I know a lot of people who started at sea to summit for example and then used that experience to work elsewhere (Backpackers pantry, Kelty, Thule, etc.).

I grew up on an island off of Lake Michigan. It is a two hour drive to the nearest mall. I had NO IDEA what mainstream society was like until I moved to New York when I was 19. All I knew was what I saw on the internet.

I spent most of my childhood/teenager years exploring the local rural islands, as well as hiking/exploring the mainland. When the lake freezes over in the winter, you can actually hike out to the other islands as well as the mainland.

Now that I live in the city, I have to confess that I prefer city-living over all.

People in Boulder fit typically into one or more of the four categories.

Rich folks- parents that obsess over their gifted children. Software developers that drive hummers. These are the people that have made it so expensive to live here. Longmont has less of these. I will be moving there soon I am sure.

College kids- fall into the rich folks category as well. Rich parents. DGAF attitude. Here to party and 420 blaze it faggot. I have lived and been to other college towns and have never met a group this entitled. CU kids ruin the bars nine months out of the year.

People like us- the smallest group: great to fish/climb/bike/camp/ski with. The only redeeming group in boulder as long as they don't overlap with the other categories. For example, the lines of range rovers that clog up the front range to fly fish shoulder to shoulder. Also see any Vail-owned ski resort.

Hippies- pot is legal here. I smoke when I want, whatever. Some people actually uprooted their lives and moved here because it was made legal. That is the stupidest fucking thing ever. They sit outside of concert venues and stores or live in parks and try to sell you "healing crystals man!" A hippy told me yesterday "know how to solve the violence in the Middle East?" I humored him and asked how.

weird. I would think this was the biggest group and that there are a lot of annoying people in it? I just want some good roads and awesome climbs for cycling. From looking at maps it looks like Longmont is about 10 miles from the base of the mountains and Boulder is right up against it.

-900k median home price
-crazy trail drama between hikers, horses, and bikes (got a $270 ticket a few months ago on a MTB)
-crowded

All in all it's the best of many worlds, being able to have a high paying city job while being able to get on singletrack 5 mins away and not see humanity for hours, but the cost of living reflects this of course, one of the most expensive places to live in the world. I may move to Grass Valley/Nevada City CA in a few years if I can figure out a way to keep my income and live there. In the meantime I get lots of time off and have a good travel rig so get to do all the cool outdoors stuff anyway. My parents live off grid in a place only accessible by 4x4 (not roughing it, full solar/battery setup, satellite internet, etc., but remote), not really an appealing life to me though, I am over my rejecting society angsty teen phase and do like to be around people most of the time.

I was born here lived all over the country, but this state is my favorite and always will be. I want mountains bam hour ride away. I want dunes, same thing.
As far as people go don't believe all the hipster stigma bullshit, its here but its not as huge as people think. Overall the people here are reasonably friendly and once you get to know each other they are always down for out activities. I fucking love living here.

Mostly suburbia and port towns, but Suffolk county still has some nice scenery and a large pine barren on the eastern end. Have to drive up to the Catskills/Adirondacks for any real hiking/camping though.

Never understood why people got upset over someone wearing a camo jacket or camo pants in an environment that isn't the woods. It does get stupid when they've got the whole 9 yards (jacket, shirt, hat, pants boots....) going on (especially when they're overweight) but if it's like 1 article of camo I honestly don't see the big deal. Not really. On occasion I wear camo pants or a jacket when I go innawoods and am too lazy to change if I have to go into town then again, half the town wears camo of some sort on a daily basis.

It's not too bad here, I mostly just go innawoods with my doge or friends when they're around play some vidya, basic lawn care shit when it's spring/summer. Wages are kind of shit unless you have some specialty degree for manufacturing/CNC/welding or business or management or some shit like that.
