what animals at certain times of the year can you not eat? Like rabbits? what animal and what season? I want to hunt for my food as much as possible. Squirrels and Rabbits are what I have plently of around here but what else?

My father hunted squirrels in his youth. He said they were good until they started getting 'wulfs' a parasite under the skin. Turns out wulfs are actually bot fly maggots, not something you want to encounter. The parasites were around until the weather turned cold enough to drive them away.
Otherwise, rabbit is good on the grill. Raccoon can be eaten, but a friend told me it was nasty. There are of course bull frog legs, and I've heard turtle is really good.
As far as birds, I'm not sure other than doves, quail, pheasant, and waterfowl can be eaten, and pigeons carry disease.

Bunnies have a parasite problem during the warm part of the year. Old timer's advise was to only hunt rabbit in months with an R in them. I've followed it and never had a problem. Rabbit is good meat, lean and dark and tasty. They're also easy to clean.

Same here, saw three of them run out of a fetid calf corpse when I was a kid. I'd have to be very hungry to eat a possum. Also remember prairie dogs are made of meat and bubonic plague, so cook them properly. Paying for medical care due to improper cooking sorta defeats the purpose of killing your own meat.

OP, wild animals can all carry parasites and some diseases. You should wear gloves when cleaning them. You nneed to care to against "Cross Contamination"...google that and learn about it.

The thing you need to do with all game meats is cook the shit out of them. In a stew pot at a low boil for a few hours . You should google this as well.

Now for what tastes good and what doesn't...that all depends on just how hungry you are. A rats ass can be a fucking treat is you haven't eaten for 4 days, Trust me I know how disgusting can become delicious when you need to eat right now.

One last bit..stay away from every flavor of Soilyant ...it's fucking people. You never want to eat humans. Never ends well.

Dear retards, you can eat any meat. The flesh of animals generally does not contain parasites. This is misinformation spread by the beef industry to prevent competition. Intestinal parasites pose a risk to other animals which is why most humans do not consume uncooked offal.
You do not need to boil or cook meat for hours for it to be safe. Wild animal meat can be cooked in much the same way as domestic raised animals in most circumstances.

Wikipedia is a block and I am a butcher with experience. You kill an animal, if it's skin or fur is missing in patches and it's eyes looked infected you're not eating it unless you're starving to death. Other wise you skin it and remove the innards with great care so as not to have it come into contact with the rest of the meat. Why? Because that's where any potential parasites might be.
Once you've done this, cook the meat. If you genuinely believe that meat needs to be boiled for hours for it not to be harmful, tell your dad/uncle (whichever you call him) to take you to the local Police station and hand in any weapons you might have because you're a danger to yourself.

Dunno. I gave up hunting them in the summer and really don't worry about it. Most mammals tend to have a season. I haven't had a chance to go rabbit hunting this fall, dangit. You can eat all insects that have 6 legs and no smell when crushed.

Example: A single european wasp will yield 1g of protein and 1/2g fat. Catch 7 and you have the same protein content as an egg. Make a wasp trap and you get 60 in a day with minimal effort.

I think I would rather eat a coon than a possum. The meat on the possums just had this odor that I don't think would cook out. I've heard stories of old timers actually roasting possums with the skin on like you would a pig. I've tried beaver. It wasn't bad at all.
