I'm currently in Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis. I'd like to make it clear as well that Reenactment does not equivelate LARPing.

There's like 100 different armies that were the "first professional armies" but Rome is definitely late into that game. It goes at LEAST back to Alexander depending on how you want to define it. Which is why those reenactors were so funny to me.

Are you going to re-enact Roman bivouacking? I went to a US Civil War re-enactment and they had set up a sizable camp but it seemed a little carnival like really. Did Romans usually set up cots? Tents? Tarps? What was the Legions version of hard tack?

Probably a bedroll, with a makeshift tarp (animalskin) shelter. Tents if it's more permanent.

I am sure it depended on the time and location too. That was one big empire that lasted a long time.
Military re-enactment is not LARPing or cos-play in my opinion as I think the last two are fantasy based while the re-enactments are reality based. They share elements but it is not really a fedora vs trilby argument.
