What do you use as your five C's when out? How do they vary depending on where you are and what you're doing?

The '5 c's' are retarded as a 'base level of what you need to survive'.

If you know what you are doing all you need is an axe and a steel container. Cordage, combustion and cover can all be sourced innawoods.

Individually, perhaps. But lacking all 3 at simultaneously is an incredible challenge for one person. Building a rainproof shelter takes all day. Fire from sticks may take (at least) all day. Cordage certainly takes all day. That's 3 days. You can be hypothermic in 6 hrs in just slightly the wrong climate.

A decent lean to, reflector fire, and bedding take about 3-4 hours. Starting a stick fire, using the plow method, takes about 15mins-1hour. Cordage takes all day/multiple days. But crap cordage, like bark or hemp or fibrous plant material can be used unprocessed.

Having done 3 days with only a knife, steel bottle, and a wool blanket, it fucking sucked, and I never want to try it again.

I've got the 5Cs covered in my psk - always with me:

cutting: spyderco delica4 (as backup to the 2 or 3 knives I always carry - pocket folder, neck knife and primary fixed blade)
combustion: bic mini, ferro rod, emergency tinder
cover: mylar blanket, poncho, heavy duty trash bag
container: stainless hip flask, bakup water bag
cordage: paracord (about 15 ft for my psk, 100 ft in the bugout bag).

Yes true, but the 5 c's cover the hardest stuff to recreate. I always assumed cover refered more to a wool blanket or space blanket to keep warm with. And technical you can boil water with no containers and you dont need an axe you can gather downed wood
