i've been looking around for a good bolt action rifle, and I think i'm going to get a Remington 700 BDL.

Just looking for a few opinions as i'm not too well versed in bolt action rifles.

Well deer and wild boar are two different categories
but yes I'd buy 30-06 if that's all there is other wise a 25-06 will be best, big punch less recoil not as hard on you. But if you get a 30-06 invest in a good squishy stock pad

I highly recommend it as a good deer, or moose gun, and the bolt is very smooth and try to get it with the metal blued, looks sexy as fuck. And highly recommend 30-06, decent rifle caliber with a wide verity of bullet grains for different game.

Also I'm from /k/ and I don't even own a nugget anymore, seriously just go there anyway and surprise! You can always not read the nugget posts.

Also new Remingtons are garbage and you should feel bad for considering one. If you have to buy a new bolt-action rifle just get a savage in .30-06; they're tough, affordable and extremely accurate right out of the box.

30-06 is a good alround caliber, lots of different loads and bulletweight. Also they can be gotten for a decent price.

prepare to drop atleast the cost of the rifle into decent optics. Modern bolt actions are all pretty decent, optics however are not. Good optics cost money, dont cheap out on them.

whats your price range and your intended use OP? Honestly I would not touch a Remington with a 10 foot pole with how they have been putting out products. Look toward either Savage, Ruger, Browning, or Tikka. Literally almost anyone else.

Hey dude, look into a Ruger Hawkeye (M77) or a CZ. They were beautiful creations. I have a Hawkeye Mark II in 30-06 which I've used for hogs, deer, elk and had on moose hunts. I love it. Its my go to rifle when the range is too far for my Guide Gun in 45/70

I am but I'm not gonna tell you to get a nugget. Browning makes some really good rifles in 30-06, although a savage arms could do just aswell. Out of curiosity what's your problem with nuggets OP?

Mine is the only rifle I use/have used for large game hunting so I don't have much to compare it to. My dad bought it in the early 90s and never used it so he gave it to me this year.

It's in 30-06 and so far the only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't lock the bolt into the closed position when the safety is on. It's a nice feature for when you're bushwhacking and don't want your action to be opened from being caught on branches.

It's a very light and handy rifle but boots pretty hard when you're shooting prone so I second getting a recoil pad. Mine has a pachmayr decelerator.

Compared to unfinished metal? Yes. Compared to other treatments? Fuck no. If you live in a moist area and the gun isn't going to be in a climate-controlled environment, if you're going to take out out in precipitation regularly and ESPECIALLY if it's going to be exposed to sea air then a synthetic stock and something like cerakote will hold up much better than a finished wooden stock and bluing.

I have a 40 year old 700 BDL (30-06) that used to by my father's. It is, by far, my best hunting rifle. Someone else said the bolt doesn't lock in safe - I don't know about the newer models but mine definitely *does* lock in safe.

All I have on it is an old 4x32 Weaver and it has been good for shots out to 300yds without problems (150gr...and probably good for longer shots but haven't tried). It's also good for unsupported shots at "fast" moving deer 100yds or better.

My Ruger M77 MK II is a great rifle. Took it hunting through rain/snow for elk in Colorado. its tough as nails and with a Nikon Bullet Drop Compensator 3-12X scope on it, I'm good out to 600 yards if I can get a good solid rest. I also have a Savage 99 in 30-30 from the 1930's but that thing is an heirloom and I don't hunt with it very often anymore. I also have a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 which I highly recommend if your shots will be within 200 yards OP. For hogs, there is simply no better rifle, save maybe a European or African Double, but those run thousands of dollars. It has the power to take any game in the world and if your into handloading, you can hunt everything from squirrels to elephants. It is light, weatherproof, reliable and powerful. I have hunted deer, moose and hogs with it.

.30-06 or .270 would be fine. Consider a .260 Remington if you want a short barrel or a .25-06 if you can stand a 24" snout. That extra couple of inches does a lot for a rifle's accuracy and muzzle velocity.

If you're trotting through the woods and could end up in a life threatening situation you best be carrying a gun with a controlled feed which is also known as a Mauser action because these fuckers chamber even if you are upside down on your back. This would mean buying a Winchester Model 70, Ruger M77, or a CZ rifle.
If you are going to hunt from a blind or a stand go ahead and buy whatever suits you.

I second this. .260 is the god tier 6.5x55 on a necked down .308 casing so you get the glorious bullet coefficient that the 6.5x55 has which is so effective people have been hunting elk/moose with it in Scandinavian for over 100 years and since it's on a .308 casing it has that short action accuracy (if you believe in that sort of thing)

IMO 30-06 is overkill for deer and pigs, but its most likely going to be more cost effective than .260. I think that 7mm-08 should also be considered. At 120grains it has the same velocity as a 25-06 (as mentioned above) of the same weight but where it shines is it uses the proven 7x57 bullet on a necked down .308 casing.

It's a .30-06 with a fairly heavy barrel, so it likes hot handloads a lot. I've never had a problem with accuracy or downrange performance from the round. You missed the MAS 36, one of which I have and love. A lot of those, though, use a .311 inch diameter bullet which is a .303 caliber as opposed to the .308 bullet in a .30 caliber.

.30 and .303 refer to bore diameter, not bullet diameter. Bullet diameter is the same as the groove, which is .308 and .311/.312 respectively. Nuggets shoot 7.62.x54 rimmed, which is .312" bullet and groove.

Caliber nomenclature is nutso, anyhow. The 9x17 (also called .380 ACP) and 9x19 (also called 9mm Luger or Parabellum) shoot a smaller diameter bullet than a 9x18 (9mm Makarov). A .303 British bullet is a larger diameter than a .308 Winchester (aka 7.62x51 NATO) bullet. The bullets fired from both .38 special and .357 magnum are the same diameter. The list goes on and on. Look to bore diameter for the actual caliber in inches.
