SAILBOATS!

No.438973 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Hey /out/,

My friends and I bought this 27" sailboat so we could sail the coast from Jax, FL down into the Greater and Lesser Antilles, and back again. We have very little experience and this will be our first trip.

There is one thing srsly concerning me. Our boat's mast is not a through-hull mast, as is appropriate for a seafaring vessel. Instead it is secured directly to the top of the deck with backing plates for support. Is this going to be sufficient strength to sail safely along coastal areas and island chains? Is there a risk of demasting? What windspeeds should we consider too much? Thanks in advance!

extra info -- the boat is about 30+ years old. It's a custom fiberglass hull built in the Netherlands. From what I can tell it was intended for lake and bay sailing, but we have taken it to local coastal waters with no trouble.
